Micron announces nvdimm memories

Micron today announced its next generation of NVDIMM-N modules that combines a DDR4 DRAM with NAND flash memory, in what are commonly called persistent memories. The new 32GB modules double the capacity of Micron's previous NVDIMM-Ns and speed up to DDR4-2933 CL21, faster than support for today's server platforms.

Micron NVDIMMs are N-type, which means they function like normal DRAM ECC DIMMs, but have NAND flash for backup data in the event of a power loss. This is different from the NVDIMM-F memory type that offers 'pure' flash storage.

How does an NVDIMM-N memory module work?

During normal system operation, Micron NVDIMMs only use DRAM as if it were ordinary DDR4 memory. When the system experiences a power failure or signals that one is imminent, the onboard module's FPGA manages the storage of DRAM content in the module's 64 GB SLC NAND flash. During a power outage, the module can be powered via a cable to an external AGIGA PowerGEM capacitor module, or via a backup battery supplied via the 12V pins of the DIMM slot.

Micron is currently unveiling the new 32GB NVDIMMs, but did not indicate when they will be available for sale.

These types of memories are also expected to be used with 3D XPoint modules in the future.
