MSI GF63 8RD is a notebook that has been created for users who are looking for an option with a reasonable price, but with a very compact design and great features. The design has been inherited from the MSI GS65 Stealth, which is already a statement of intent of the brand. Will it live up to the demands?

First of all, we thank MSI for the trust placed in ceding the product to us for analysis.

MSI GF63 8RD technical characteristics

Unboxing and design

In the presentation of this MSI GF63 8RG we do not see any news, because the brand continues with its good work demonstrated in all the models it has sent us. The equipment is presented in a black cardboard box, and with the best protection to avoid damage during transport. The laptop is covered by a very soft cloth bag, something important to protect its aluminum surface. Along with the equipment we find the 120W power supply.

This MSI GF63 is pretty much a copy of the MSI GS65 Stealth Thin, and that's great because that laptop has an absolutely brilliant design. Like its high-end cousin, this gaming notebook boasts an 82% screen-to-body ratio with bezels of just 4.9mm, containing a 15.6-inch display in a 14-inch frame. Despite the fine bezels, MSI has managed to keep the webcam on top so as not to harm the user experience.

The two teams share an almost identical body line design, as well as keyboard and trackpad placement. The only real way to visually distinguish them is that the MSI GF63 sports the classic black design with pops of red, though the latter is kept to a much higher minimum than in previous years. Also, instead of having the MSI GS65 Stealth Thin copper-toned metal surround around the vents, it just has a bit of plastic to protect the heat sinks in this area.

Most of the laptop's chassis is made of metal, including the display lid and keyboard deck. On the other hand, the bottom panel is a mix of plastic and metal that looks quite good, and offers a multitude of vents. In summary, we can say that this MSI GF63 8RD is a cheap version of the MSI GS65 Stealth Thin, a device designed for users who are looking for a spectacular and very light design, but with an adjusted sale price. This equipment has dimensions of 358.5 x 247.7 x 17.7 mm and a reduced weight of 1.8 Kg.

As for the connections, we find an HDMI, a USB Type-C, three USB 3.1 Gen 1, a Gigabit Ethernet network port, the 3.5 mm jack for audio and micro, the DC power connector, and the lock Kensington.

As we have mentioned, this MSI GF63 8RD includes a 15.3-inch screen, which reaches a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, offering a density and image definition that are more than correct. In this case it is a 60 Hz panel, a measure to reduce costs compared to panels at 144 Hz or 120 Hz, in addition to the fact that its GPU does not have the power to move said panels comfortably as we will see later.

MSI has maintained a panel with excellent image quality, so much so that the manufacturer brings it up to the IPS level, even if it is AHVA technology. True Color 2.0 technology ensures the best calibration of the screen, in addition to offering six profiles including a blue light filter, a gaming mode, a cinema mode, an office mode, a night mode and the highest fidelity mode. color.

As for the MSI GF63 8RD keyboard, it is a unit with membrane technology and a lighting system in red that we can adjust on three levels and turn it off. Again a sacrifice has been made to lower the cost, since RGB Mystic Light lighting has been left aside. Red will be enough, but we will miss the colors. The keyboard maintains the same quality as all those used by MSI, with a very nice touch and good feedback.

The touchpad is quite small in this case, the first feeling is that it is clearly below the keyboard in quality. It is not a bad touchpad by any means, but we are used to seeing much better things at MSI.

Inside this MSI GF63 8RD we find a six-core and twelve-core Intel Core i7 8750HQ processor that is capable of reaching 4.1 Hz turbo speed. It is a very powerful processor, so that we can do all kinds of very demanding tasks without problems. This processor is accompanied by the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050Ti Max-Q graphics with 4 GB of GDDR5 memory. GeForce GTX GPUs with a Max-Q design produce less heat and allow greater design flexibility, even allowing the physical size of the notebook to decrease. Max-Q requires the GPU to operate within the optimal range on the power / performance curve, which produces the best overall performance with the highest energy efficiency. The Max-Q design seeks the best performance obtainable with maximum energy efficiency.

This hardware is accompanied by 16 GB of DDR4 2666 RAM in dual Chanel, a 256 GB SATA SSD is also included so that it does not lack fluidity when moving applications, and a 1 TB HDD so that we do not lack space. Cooling is provided by MSI's Cooler Boost system that uses multiple high-quality copper heatpipes and 47-blade fans each to move large amounts of air.

The MSI Dragon Center software manages this hardware in the best possible way. It is a complete application with a very clear and intuitive interface, which displays information such as all the components, the temperature and its percentage of use. It includes a freeing up of memory space with a single click and the option of managing various ventilation profiles.

Performance and storage tests

First of all we are going to see the speed of the SSD disk of this MSI GF63 8RD, for this we have used the popular program CristalDiskMark in its latest version, this has been the result obtained.

Cinebench R15 gives us an idea of the potential of its processor.

We now turn to see the behavior of the team in the most demanding games, all of which have been executed with the graphics at maximum and in 1080p resolution, the tests have been done with the FRAPS benchmarking tool for 180 seconds, it has been repeated three times and an average has been made.

The graphic adjustments have been as follows:

  • Far Cry 5: Ultra TAACrysis 3: Very High SMAA x 2 Project Cars 2: Ultra MSAA High Overwatch: Epico SMAADoom 2: Ultra TSSAA x 8

In the case of Far Cry 5, the benchmark tool included in the game has been used.

Final words and conclusion about MSI GF63 8RD

MSI GF63 8RD is an excellent notebook PC for users looking for something very portable, powerful and moderately priced. Its design inherited from the GS65 8RG makes it a very light team, weighing only 1.8 Kg that will not bother you when carrying it in your backpack. Its chassis is quite robust, somewhat due to the use of high quality materials, which are very resistant while maintaining lightness. The screen is at a high level, with excellent image quality.

As for the hardware, it offers some very good features, but it shows that it is an economical team and that it is not aimed at very demanding players. This laptop will move all games to 1080p, although if you want maximum fluidity, it will be necessary to lower the graphic detail, and more as the months go by. The GeForce GTX 1050Ti gives for what it gives, and you cannot ask for miracles in this regard. The advantage of having an underpowered GPU is that it is underheated, and thus the cooling system is extremely quiet, even under load. The temperature remains at 85ºC for the GPU and 80ºC for the CPU, quite good and excellent figures if we consider the low noise it makes. Another advantage of a little powerful hardware is that the battery reaches almost 7 hours of autonomy.

What I liked the least about this team is the touchpad, although it is understandable that a few sacrifices have had to be made to maintain an adjusted price. MSI GF63 8RD is for sale for a price of 999 euros with 8 GB of RAM and 1050 euros with 16 GB of RAM.
