This time we are going to analyze one of the MSI GL series notebooks, one that we have not touched too much this year and that is characterized by its good performance / price ratio. It is the MSI GL75 9SEK, a 17-inch gaming laptop with i7-9750H and RTX 2060 that aims to unite the maximum performance in games with a very complete configuration section. And it is that we have a SteelSeries keyboard, a Giant Speaker sound, a 1 TB SSD and a large cooling section.
Before continuing, we must thank MSI for their trust in us for giving us these equipment to carry out our analysis.
MSI GL75 9SEK technical characteristics
Unboxing
We begin the review of this MSI GL75 9SEK as always by its Unboxing, which on this occasion repeats presentation with a large briefcase-type cardboard box with its corresponding carrying handle. It is made of rigid cardboard, and on the outer faces we do not have any information about it for the sole purpose of the model.
Inside we find the laptop inside a black cloth bag next to another standard plastic one. In turn, two polyethylene foam molds prevent blows from occurring during transport. On one side, and in a separate cardboard box, we have the external power supply, while in another tiny section we have the power cable.
The bundle then consists of the following elements:
- MSI GL75 9SEK Portable 180W External Power Supply User Instructions
Fairly sparse in variety, but enough for a laptop.
Exterior design
As for the design of the MSI GL75 9SEK, we do not have great news compared to the other series, since the manufacturer has used almost the same style as for example the GE Raider. Aluminum predominates for the exterior and interior cover finishes, while details such as screen frames are made of hard plastic.
We can deduce that the size of the screen this time is 17.3 inches when it comes to the GL75, while the 65 will be the ones with the 15.3-inch screen. This means that we have a size of 397 mm wide, 271 mm deep and only 28 mm thick, weighing about 2.5 Kg if we do not install a 2.5 "HDD.
The screen frames will as always be very thin, with about 5 mm on the sides and 7 mm in the upper area to house the webcam. Likewise, the lower area is the widest and the most depth it adds to the equipment with a thickness of approximately 20 mm. We do not have any type of RGB lighting in the chassis, although we do have it on the keyboard as we will see later.
We observe how the keyboard configuration is in full format and in perfect Spanish, being exactly the same as that incorporated by other brand gaming equipment. Even though the screen is very very thin, the aluminum cover appears to be of a good thickness, as it is rigid enough to prevent twisting when pushed from the corner to open it. In this unit at least, the opening is relatively hard, perhaps due to its low usage.
The design of the edges is basically the same as the GE series, keeping the triple stepped edge with bevelled end inwards to give the sensation of greater thinness. A fairly conservative style, although effective for a team that we do not consider Max-Q. the rear area has a double grill for the outlet of hot air without protection through filters as usual.
The lower area in this case is made of hard plastic, and it is presented with a very detailed and aggressive screen printing, not to mention the huge number of screws that hold it to the inner chassis. Facing cooling, we have a fairly closed base, and barely open by the air intake of the fans. In this case we would have liked it to be more in the high-end style, we will see how the system behaves.
Ports and connections
The port configuration is in the classic style with the two sides of the MSI GL75 9SEK busy. In this case we have a fairly standard port distribution.
In the left area we have:
- Kensington slot RJ45 ethernet port HDMI 2.0 Mini DisplayPort 1.21x USB 3.1 Gen1 Type-A1x USB 3.1 Gen1 Type-C2x 3.5mm jack for microphone input and audio output
The corresponding ventilation grille could not be missing either. Keep in mind that USB-C in this case is not Thunderbolt nor does it have DisplayPort compatibility, since a separate connector has been provided for this purpose.
In the right area we have:
- 2x USB 3.1 Gen1 Type-A SD card reader Power input Jack
With another grille of identical size to the one in the left, the truth is that the expulsion of air is assured. Once again, we have USB from Gen1, and no sign of Gen2, something that can be expected and understood from a gaming team that seeks to reduce its price.
120Hz Full HD IPS screen
The screen of the MSI GL75 9SEK is another of the changes that we have in this series, although we think that much more in line with the performance in games that we are going to get in a laptop like this that includes RTX 2060 inside.
The GL75 version has a 17.3-inch panel as we have already commented before. This screen has IPS technology with native resolution Full HD at 1920x1080p. In it, we have a refresh rate of 120 Hz, although it does not specify the response speed of it. Its construction quality is at a high level since no bleeding has been detected in it.
This model also has a version with IPS screen at 60 Hz Full HD, for those looking for something more economical.
We do not have more technical information about the panel, so it will have to be obtained from the calibration tests we always do. What we do know are the viewing angles, which will be 178 or both vertically and horizontally. In any case, it does not seem that they are as good as those offered by the 240 Hz and 60 Hz IPS offered by the higher-end models, or at least that is the feeling it gives us.
Neither are any features specified with respect to color spaces. In this case the MSI GL75 9SEK does not include the Creator Center software as it is found in many other gaming equipment, so we will not be able to change the panel profiling parameters.
Calibration
We have carried out some calibration tests for this IPS panel with our X-Rite Colormunki Display colorimeter, and the HCFR and DisplayCAL 3 programs, both of which are free and available to any user with a colorimeter. With these tools we will analyze the color graphics of the screen in the DCI-P3 and sRGB spaces, and we will compare the colors that the monitor delivers with respect to the reference palette of both color spaces.
The tests have been carried out with the brightness at 100% and the standard configuration.
Brightness and Contrast
Measurements | Contrast | Gamma value | Color temperature | Black level |
@ 100% gloss | 1239: 1 | 2.16 | 5967K | 0.1787 cd / m 2 |
With a brightness of 100% we have a good contrast that comfortably exceeds 1200: 1, and also a very good black depth without exceeding 0.2 nits. Similarly, the average gamma measured on the screen is 2.16, very close to the 2.2 considered as a reference. Only the color temperature can be improved, which is well below the ideal D65 point (6500K), in fact, it would have been normal for it to be above it. We will see how this affects color spaces.
Regarding brightness, we also see that it is slightly lower than IPS panels that use the GE and GS series for example, since it is located at approximately 250 nits, except for the right side that borders on 300. We do not have HDR support as we can understand.
SRGB color space
As usual, we have placed both the calibration graphs for this space and the Delta E value from the color palette. As we could assume, the calibration of this panel is not perfect, with an average value in this color space of 5.19, well above 2, which we say is the usual thing. In fact, the gray scale values are very good, but the difference is clearly widened due to the colors, which are generally very little saturated or little contrasted.
Regarding the coverage of the space, we have only 60.7%, which is certainly very little for an IPS panel.
DCI-P3 color space
The aforementioned for sRGB is extensible for this color space, even more demanding in coverage than the previous one. And it is that we find a similar average Delta E and only 43.7% coverage for it.
Without a doubt, in this panel a calibration and profiling would be very useful to overcome the factory limitations. In any case, it is not a design laptop, but gaming, and its quality of color can be in the background, since those 120 Hz are its great asset.
Giant speaker sound system
The MSI GL75 9SEK has the well-known Giant Speaker system which consists of two round speakers with power of 3W each. It is a configuration with one characteristic above others, and it is the sound power and the volume that they can reach. In addition to this, we have, as usual, a management by means of the Realtek codec that gives life to the system.
In the multimedia section of the equipment, you cannot miss the webcam and the array of two microphones. Of them, we do not have too much to add that you do not know. The sound is captured correctly and the camera supports a maximum resolution of 1280x720p. Nothing out of the ordinary in this case, because the image quality will be a carbon copy of what we have seen in other reviews in which we even included screenshots.
SteelSeries keyboard and touchpad with separate buttons
A big decision by MSI has been to include the SteelSeries keyboard in this MSI GL75 9SEK, one that is also used in each and every gaming series including the powerful Titan. This is the SteelSeries Per-Key RGB Backlight, the quintessential membrane-type gaming keyboard from MSI. Of course available in Spanish configuration with Ñ as is this case.
Undoubtedly one of the ones we like the most from the current generation of laptops from the manufacturer, with a high-quality membrane and minimal travel for maximum speed. This keyboard provides us with a complete panel with a numeric keyboard and some island-type keys with just enough size and separation to be comfortable for both playing and typing. The keyboard also has an N-Key function to support a large number of simultaneous keystrokes.
This keyboard can be controlled from the corresponding software both to manage its lighting key by key, and to configure macros. In addition, we have a "G" key dedicated to selecting between the different lighting configurations available. Beside it, another key will allow us to select the profile of fans in maximum performance for times of need. The typical quick functions on the "F" keys and the arrow keys could not be missing either.
On the other hand, the touchpad that we find has a traditional size and format and the two click buttons separate from the touch panel. In this case, we are not at the top of the range, and we notice this as soon as we start pressing its buttons. Navigation through the panel is very good, but the buttons are quite hard and you have to exert some force to press them, which is not a great advantage if we use it in gaming. Like the rest of them, it supports the typical gestures and functions of Windows 10 with up to 4 simultaneous fingers.
Network connectivity
We now continue with the network connectivity of the MSI GL75 9SEK, in which we found no major changes from the previous generation. In any case we have of the two types as it should be.
First of all, a Realtek Gigabit Ethernet network card has been installed for the wired connection, which provides a bandwidth of 100/1000 Mbps. It can be striking not to have opted for the Intel I219-v chip used by the most current model.
Regarding the wireless interface, this time we do have an Intel Wireless-AC 9560, which works under the IEEE 802.11ac standard. It will give us a bandwidth of 1.73 Gbps in 5GHz and 533 Mbps in 2.4 GHz, we already know this card. Too bad we have not integrated one of the new AX200, but we will always have the possibility to do it ourselves, as it is a card installed on an M.2 in 2230 format.
Internal hardware
We now come to the section on the internal hardware of the MSI GL75 9SEK, where we will see that for a fairly tight price we have a very interesting configuration and above all very well balanced.
As a good gaming laptop, we have the invaluable presence of the 9th generation processor most used this 2019 for gaming, the Intel Core i7-9750H. This CPU comes to replace the i7-8750H. It works at a base frequency of 2.6 GHz and 4.5 GHz in turbo boost mode. A 9th generation CPU that also has 6 cores and 12 processing threads under a TDP of only 45W and a L3 cache of 12 MB.
Along with this we have a motherboard with HM370 chipset and a total of 16 GB of Samsung RAM at 2666 MHz. Best of all, it comes in two 8GB modules to take advantage of Dual Channel capabilities. In total, its two SO-DIMM slots support 64GB, with two 32GB modules in each So-DIMM. It is great news to have Samsung chips, which are the best in both performance and reliability.
The specification "9SE" already tells us that we have an Nvidia RTX 2060 Max-Q installed inside. The main details of its specifications are 1920 CUDA Core, the same as in the desktop version, and Tensor and RT cores to do Ray Tracing and DLSS. The processing frequency is between 1110 MHz and 1335 MHz at maximum performance to give us 160 TMUs and 48 ROPs. There is also no lack of 8 GB of GDDR6 memory, although in this case they work at 12 Gbps instead of 14.
Finally, the storage section consists of a single PCIe 3.0 x16 SSD drive over NVMe in the corresponding M.2 slot. A Samsung TB981 with a 1TB capacity has been chosen, which is very good news in terms of performance, since this unit exceeds 3000 MB / s in reading and 2000 MB / s in writing. The small disadvantage that we have is that there is no extra M.2 slot to install other drives, although in your case we do have space for a SATA SSD / HDD.
Refrigeration system
For the MSI GL75 9SEK cooling system, we also have some very good news, as the Cooler Boost 5 version has been used. This system is made up of no less than 8 completely bare copper heatpipes as we see in the screenshots, and two turbine fans. It is practically the same as the one installed by the MSI GE75 Raider.
As always, the system is divided into two blocks, on the right we have the cold plate of the CPU, which has three dedicated heatpipes to capture the heat and take it outside powered by the corresponding fan. And in the left area we have another larger cold plate to capture the heat from both the GPU and the GDDR6 memories through 4 heatpipes plus one from the CPU.
This system will give us very good results with the joint operation of CPU + GPU at maximum performance and without thermal throttling. On the chipset side, we don't have any kind of heatsink, while the VRM is also under a heat pipe just above the CPU. We must say this time that it is a fairly silent system while we do not activate the turbo mode with the manual key, and its efficiency allows it to not be at maximum speed while we play.
Autonomy
In this aspect we have neither bad news nor good news, since they are the expected results of a gaming laptop such as the MSI GL75 9SEK. A good 6-cell Li-Ion battery has been installed that provides a power of 51 WHr. In combination with this, a 180W external power supply sufficient to power the hardware we have, but not to overclock it.
As always, we have looked at how much autonomy we have by making basic use of the equipment, with the brightness at half, and the result is about 4 hours, with the "best battery" mode in place. It is not a bad result for the hardware we have and the 17-inch screen, although it is not outstanding either.
Test of performance
We move on to the practical part where we will see the performance offered by this MSI GL75 9SEK. As always, we have carried out synthetic tests and tests in games.
All the tests that we have subjected this laptop have been carried out with the equipment connected to the current, the ventilation profile in sport mode using Dragon Center and the energy profile at maximum performance.
SSD performance
Let's start with the benchmark of the Samsung SSD, for this we have used CristalDiskMark in its version 6.0.2.
Without a doubt a very wise decision is to have incorporated a Samsung SSD in this laptop, since the gross performance shown by the manufacturer's units is much better than for example those of the Intel 760p or 660p. We have almost 3, 500 MB / s in sequential read rates, with excellent results in random read. While in writing it also measures up with almost 2400 MB / s sequential and more than 2000 MB / s in random.
This makes the load times for games and heavy applications very good, because also with 960 GB available we have enough space for games, system and applications.
CPU and GPU benchmarks
Let's see below the synthetic test block. For this we have used the following programs:
- Cinebench R15Cinebench R20PCMark 8VRMARK3DMark Time Spy, Fire Strike, Fire Strike Ultra
Gaming performance
To establish a real performance of this MSI GL75 9SEK, we have tested a total of 7 titles with fairly existing graphics, which are the following, and with the following configuration:
- Final Fantasy XV, standard, TAA, DirectX 12 DOOM, Ultra, TAA, Open GL Deus EX Mankind Divided, Alto, Anisotropico x4, DirectX 12 Far Cry 5, Alto, TAA, DirectX 12 Metro Exodus, Alto, Anisotropico x16, DirectX 12 Shadow of the Tomb Rider, High, TAA + Anisotropic x4, DirectX 12 Control, High, DLSS at 1280x720p, Ray Tracing Medium, DirectX 12
The performance is more or less what can be expected, although very close to equipment that has RTX 2070 and worse cooling systems. In any case, it is shown that a 120 Hz screen is the ideal for such a team, since in most cases, exceeding 144 Hz with medium / high quality will be difficult for an RTX 2060 Max-Q.
Temperatures
The stress process to which the MSI GL75 9SEK has been subjected has taken around 60 minutes, in order to have a reliable average temperature. This process has been carried out with Furmark, Prime95 and the capture of temperatures with HWiNFO.
MSI GL75 9SEK | Repose | Maximum performance |
CPU | 41 ºC | 85 ºC |
GPU | 41 ºC | 66 ºC |
Again, we can refer to the GE65 Raider for being a laptop that we analyzed not long ago, because we have incredibly similar results in terms of temperatures despite the fact that it has an RTX 2060 instead of an RTX 2070.
The most important thing to know is that we have not encountered thermal throttling during the games and stress testing sessions of the set. The system has performed flawlessly as we already knew, giving us the maximum performance expected from this round and balanced set of hardware.
As we have already commented before, the system does not even need to reach its maximum speed while we play, so we even have a little margin to make it quieter.
Final words and conclusion about MSI GL75 9SEK
In the wide range of gaming laptops that have MSI, the GL series and in particular this MSI GL75 9SEK will be a great acquisition for less than 1400 euros. Where it has not been renewed too much in this 7th generation is in the design, continuous, in matt black and with very sober and simplified lines. With a 17.3-inch screen we have a relatively compact and fairly thin equipment, only 28 mm.
Extending further on the screen, this 120 Hz IPS panel is very successful for gaming, since with the RTX 2060 it is not expected to obtain more than 144 Hz in decent graphic qualities. However, it is one step behind those that are being mounted recently in the high range, since neither the color nor the calibration are at too high a level. In addition, the brightness reaches about 250 nits on average.
We recommend that you take a look at our guide to the best laptops on the market
Performance in games we do have assured, and for us one of its strengths is the complete and round hardware that we have for this price. The 6C / 12T i7-9750H has been chosen along with an RTX 2060, accompanied by 16 GB RAM Dual Channel and 1 TB Samsung SSD, so we could not be better covered we could not be. Quality / price where there are.
Regarding the multimedia and peripherals section, we also do not have great details such as the SteelSeries RGB keyboard per key that is also used by the high-end and a great performance of the sound system. The touchpad has not completely convinced us, with quite hard buttons, although its precision and response are correct.
We finish as always with the price section, which this time the MSI GL75 9SEK will be available for € 1, 399. Quite adjusted and adequate for everything it offers us, since we will have similar models in hardware of the same brand for more than 2000 euros. For this reason we consider that it is a highly recommended option for gaming.
