The MSI PS42 8RB laptop takes a bold step away from the brand's gaming roots, and plunges into a competitive segment dominated by giants like Apple and Microsoft. This new slim and lightweight ultrabook is designed for creators, a broad group that every laptop maker is trying to win over. This, this 14-inch machine is one of the most compact devices you can buy with a dedicated GPU, an excellent variety of ports for professionals, and a sharp and vivid screen.

First of all, we thank MSI for the trust placed in us when transferring the product to us for analysis.

MSI PS42 8RB technical characteristics

Unboxing and design

The MSI PS42 8RB laptop is offered to the user in a neutral colored cardboard box with the typical brand design. Once we open it, we find inside it another white box that contains the laptop, and next to it the 65W power supply in this case. Inside this second white box is the laptop, covered by a very soft bag to protect its delicate surface.

Finally we focus our attention on the MSI PS42 8RB, which is an elegant device and not for everyone. Its dimensions are only 322 x 222 x 15.9 mm with a weight of 1.19 Kg. The ultraportable design has a sleek aluminum exterior, but opening the lid reveals an interior filled with unique design cues. Between the centered circular power button and the LED indicators on the cover, this laptop is the kind of device you'd find in a science fiction movie from the '80s.

The silver lid has a stylish brushed aluminum finish topped with the MSI Dragon logo. If we keep looking, a white backlit keyboard, and a Tron-like font span the width next to three white LEDs for power, charging, and Wi-Fi status. There is also a striking rectangular vent that surrounds the circular power button on top of the platform.

The hinges aggressively do a good job of preventing the lid from wobbling, but they also allow us to open the equipment up to 180º to improve its possibilities of use in presentations and meetings.

Next to the LEDs on the left side of the chassis is a headphone / microphone jack, a second USB Type-C port, and an HDMI. MSI PS42 is charged through a standard power connector. On the right side of the chassis are two USB 3.1 ports, a USB Type-C input, an SD card slot, and a lock slot.

Its edge-to-edge screen pushes the surface to the limit. The 14-inch screen is detailed and vivid, as we often see on all panels used by MSI. The used AMVA panel covers 116 percent of the sRGB color gamut. Its resolution is 1920 x 1080 pixels, resulting in a fairly high pixel density and sensational image quality. It is a 60 Hz panel, with a brightness level not specified by MSI.

To get a screen so tight to the edges, the webcam had to be placed at the bottom, something that affects and greatly negatively affects the experience of use, since it will be difficult for us not to go out in an inappropriate and appropriate way.

The keyboard of this MSI PS42 8RB offers a comfortable typing experience despite having shallow keys. Despite the fact that the 0.9 millimeters of travel of each key is not very large, it compensates with an ideal actuation force of 72 grams. Plus, the keys are full-size and well-spaced, making it one of the most comfortable we've ever used on an ultrabook. On the other hand, there is not much contrast between the translucent font and the silver key caps, something to improve.

Next to the keyboard is the touchpad, quite small, although with a pleasant touch and easy to press buttons. This touchpad includes support for gestures such as pinch to zoom, swipe three fingers to open applications and scroll with two fingers. A fingerprint sensor in the upper left corner allows for a faster and more secure login.

As for the sound, this MSI PS42 8RB offers us a very good quality, with a fairly high volume level and that does not distort. You can adjust the surround sound effect of the speaker with the included Nahimic software, but it will not improve the quality of the speakers. It is a configuration of two speakers with a power of 2W each.

Beneath the hood is a quad- core, eight-core Intel Core i7 8550U processor at a base frequency of 1.8 GHz and maximum turbo boost of 4 GHz to enhance performance. This processor is accompanied by 1 6 GB of RAM, a 512 GB SSD, and an Nvidia Geforce MX150 graphics card with 2 GB of DDR5 memory. To keep all of this hardware cool, MSI's exclusive Cooler Boost 3 cooling technology has been featured , which with 2 dedicated fans and 3 heatpipes stands out from the competition, keeping equipment cool even in heavy use. MSI PS42 8RB includes a 50 Whr battery that promises up to 10 hours of autonomy, something that will have to be verified.

Finally, we highlight its Wi-Fi 802.11 ac + Bluetooth v4.2 wireless connection, thanks to which we can navigate at full speed and use a multitude of peripherals and accessories without the hassle of cables.

Performance and storage tests
