The MSI PS63 Modern 8RC is our protagonist today. It is an ultra thin notebook of only 15.9 mm with a spectacular and elegant aluminum design that will not leave you indifferent. A laptop oriented to design and portability with a 15.6 ”100% RGB and True Color screen, along with an Nvidia GTX 1050 and an Intel Core i7-8565U processor that will give us power while offering great autonomy compared to the latest gaming laptops that we have analyzed.

Will it live up to our expectations? If you want to know the answer, don't miss our analysis.

As always, we thank MSI for giving us this beautiful laptop to do our review.

MSI PS63 Modern 8RC technical features

Unboxing and design

Not only do we have gaming laptops on the market, although they are certainly the most popular for us, so this time we wanted to deal with a product that is more design-oriented, precisely because of its own ultrabook design, elegance and great screen quality and balanced hardware.

The presentation is just as elegant as the MSI PS63 Modern 8RC itself, with a completely white hard cardboard box and with the brand's logo in the central area. Being an engineering sample, the bundle consists of just the laptop, the external power supply along with the cable. For the rest of users, we imagine that they will come with the typical user guides and guarantee papers.

The external appearance clearly stands out for its clean lines in the purest MacBook style and this time the material chosen for the construction has been aluminum. We will notice this immediately on the side bevels with the characteristic shine that stands out through the paint. With impeccable finishes in brushed aluminum style and the bezels of the lid and touchpad in electric blue, or Galaxy, as they call it. The lower area itself is made of plastic, although identical finishes.

The chosen color is matte dark gray in its entirety together with the MSI logo on the outside of the lid. It really is a very light laptop, more than a priori could be expected thanks in part to those extremely compact measures of 356.8 mm wide, 233.7 mm deep 15.9 mm thick. The weight of the MSI PS63 Modern 8RC is only 1.6 kg with the included battery.

If we open the laptop, we will see that this interior area is also made of aluminum, specifically the base where the keyboard is located. A keyboard that this time does not incorporate a numerical pad for reasons of space but does provide white LED lighting. The touchpad is located in the central area and is spatially wide with a fingerprint reader in one corner, also with Galaxy blue bezels.

The screen on this MSI PS63 Modern 8RC is Thin Bezel style which is basically an ultra slim bezel of just 5.6mm around the screen. It is one of the main reasons for having gotten this notebook so compact and portable. In addition, in the upper area there is enough space to install the webcam that we will see in more detail later.

Well, we started by studying the lateral areas of this MSI PS63 Modern 8RC more closely, specifically we are going to go back to see how this part has been designed. Firstly, we see two openings at both ends that will of course serve to expel the hot air circulating through the cooling system.

The display lid opening system also consists of two hinges at both ends. Note that once opened, part of the screen frame is just in front of the air outlet, which will cause it to rise towards the screen and not go freely backwards. It is an aesthetic resource, yes, but less thermally efficient.

Now we go to the right side of the MSI PS63 Modern 8RC to see what we have, although it is appreciated how the laptop gets thinner as we go further. Well, we find a USB 3.1 Gen1 port and another USB 3.1 Gen2 port in the area, along with a MicroSD card reader, yes, only MicroSD. We think that a somewhat broader reader in terms of support would have been more positive, because there is space.

So let's go to the left side to see the other ports. We start with a 3.5 mm combo jack connector, that is, with microphone input and audio output simultaneously. And we continue with an HDMI port that supports 4K @ 30 Hz resolution, a USB 3.1 Gen1 Type-C port with support for DisplayPort 1.3, and a USB 3.1 Gen1 with Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 and the connector for the power supply.

In this case we do not have a Thunderbolt 3 port or an RJ-45 connector for wired LAN networks, since the thickness is too tight to enter it.

screen

We really liked the beautiful contrast that makes the black and thin frame of the screen together with the dark gray color of the rest of the set. In addition, the panel has a very good quality Anti Glare finish to avoid direct reflections.

As for specifications, we have a design-oriented panel with IPS technology and a 15.6-inch diagonal. The native resolution is 1920 × 1080 @ 60 Hz, which is a normal Full HD. In this case, we will not have Pantone certification on it, but its color space is detailed, which will be 100% sRGB and 72% NTSC, ideal for photography, artistic design and video editing.

When it comes to putting an IPS, we are clear that the viewing angles are going to be about 178 degrees. And although in the photos it is not seen so clearly, the color distortion is practically nil placing us completely in the lateral area. This panel also features True Color technology and custom display modes for every occasion (sRGB, Designer, Office, Movie, Anti-Blue and gamer). We have not detected the Bleeding phenomenon either, at least in our unit everything works perfectly.

Web camera, microphone and sound

And since we are looking at a laptop, this section could not be missing either, in which we will talk a bit about the camera and multimedia section. MSI PS63 Modern 8RC installs a traditional HD Webcam capable of capturing photos at a resolution of 1280 × 720 pixels and video at identical and maximum 30 FPS. Something short and old we must say, for a few euros more there are better sensors to install.

The level of detail of recording and capture is quite low as is evident, and the problems become more noticeable when we have little light in the room, something that we must take into account if we usually make video calls on Skype for example.

Regarding the microphone system, we have one on each side of the camera to capture sound in stereo and with a unidirectional pattern. The quality is simply the standard, not suitable for live broadcasts via streaming but sufficient for video calls and basic use.

Finally we have the sound system, which is based on two 2W speakers located on both sides at the bottom that will give us a quality sound, but without reaching the level of the best gaming of the brand. Although bass is lacking, the sound is powerful and clear at mid and high frequencies.

Touchpad, keyboard and fingerprint sensor

We will start as always describing the feelings that the keyboard of the MSI PS63 Modern 8RC has left us. It is a chiclet-type keyboard, of this there is no doubt, of a very good quality. It is very pleasant to the touch and something positive is that the keys are very little separated from each other, something that makes it much easier to work with it on our legs or in tight places. The keys have medium travel and little hardness on keystrokes, so it is clearly designed for typing and not for gaming.

As we can see, the configuration is of the TKL type, that is, without the traditional numerical pad, something evident for reasons of space and accessibility. Something also very interesting is that it incorporates backlighting, although in this case it will be in a fixed and white configuration, nothing of Mystic Light. Nor will we have an Antighosting N-Key function.

After the excellent quality of the keyboard, let's see if this touchpad is up to the task too. The first thing that stands out is its great size and its location in the central area. The dimensions of this will be 140 mm wide and 6.5 mm long, occupying more than 1/3 of the total width of the laptop.

Thanks to the design, we will have a large space to move with maximum precision and execute different gestures that will make life easier. The touch of the panel is silky and with a very fast response.

You may have also noticed that in the upper left area of this touchpad we will find an integrated fingerprint reader. It is a differential feature in laptops that are not flatly oriented to gaming, since few of them have these interesting details, and we do not know why. The fact is that this sensor is compatible with Windows Hello and its biometric authentication system, it works perfectly and quickly, so we can not ask for more.

Network connectivity with Wi-Fi only

Something that also usually happens in this type of thin notebooks is that network connectivity is simplified due to the elimination of the RJ-45 connector for the wired Ethernet network. For this reason the section will be quite brief.

At least Wi-Fi connectivity is quite good since it incorporates an Intel Wireless-AC 9560 card capable of providing a total bandwidth of 1.73 Gbps in 2 × 2 connections in both the 2.4 GHz band and the 5 GHz at a frequency of 160 MHz. Of course this card is CNVio type installed on an M.2 2230 with support for MU-MIMO and Intel vPro technology. The card also incorporates Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity .

Technical characteristics and hardware

We continue with one of the most important parts, which is undoubtedly seeing what hardware and features this MSI PS63 Modern 8RC has, because it is tiny, but quite powerful. In this case, we have also decided to open it to better observe its entire internal area.

We will start with the heart of the laptop, if a processor, that an Intel Core i7-8565U has been mounted on this model. Recall that this team appeared in November 2018, and this CPU came out almost simultaneously, so we did not yet have the 9th generation ones available. Needless to do, because we have a 4-core processor and 8 processing threads that work at 1.8 GHz base frequency, and 4.6 GHz in turbo boost 2.0 mode.

It also has 8 MB of L3 cache and a TDP of only 15W configurable between 10 and 25W. It also supports a total of 32 GB of DDR4-2666 MHz RAM in Dual Channel and a maximum temperature (Tj Max) of 100 o C. The good thing about U family CPUs is that they consume much less than H, and the Performance really is very good for the tasks that this notebook is mainly intended for, which is portability, design and daily work, without giving up graphic power.

The memory configuration that we will have in MSI PS63 Modern 8RC will be the same as in 8M, that is, a 16 GB DDR4 2666 MHz module signed by Samsung. The positive of this, that we still have another free SO-DIMM slot to place a maximum of 32 GB, and the negative, is that we do not have a Dual Channel configuration as a base.

Both RAM, SSD and HDD can be quickly updated.

The graphics card that this laptop mounts does not belong to the new generation, remember that on the date it came out, we did not yet have the new GTX 1660 or GTX 1650. For this reason, MSI has installed an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Max-Q with a total of 4 GB GDDR5 at 7 Gbps. Recall that this card is of Pascal architecture in the manufacturing process of 14 nm and a core speed between 999 and 1328 MHz. It has 640 CUDA Cores, 40 TMUs (texturing units), 32 ROPs (pasteurization units) and a 128-bit memory bus. As always, we will see the results in games in the next section.

Now it's the turn of the storage configuration, which in this case will also be quite quick to comment on. We have a single Samsung PM981 SSD attached to a 512GB M.2 NVMe PCIe x4 interface. The theoretical speed it will offer us is 3, 000 MB / s and 1, 800 MB / s in sequential reading and writing, respectively.

We believe that for a design-oriented laptop and eventual gaming, a 1TB drive would have been the right thing to do. In any case, we will also have a second M.2 SATA slot to install another SSD in it.

Refrigeration system

Let us now go on to talk in more detail about the cooling system. It is a relatively powerful laptop, and to optimize available space, MSI has introduced a separate CPU and GPU system.

On the one hand, we find a single copper heatpipe installed on the CPU (right side) that covers the entire chip and is fixed by a 4-screw socket. This heatpipe transfers the heat to a small heatsink located in front of a turbine-type fan that will be in charge of sending the heat out.

On the other hand, we will have two of these copper heatpipes on top of the GPU (left side) installed in the same way and doing the same with the heat released. This GTX gets hotter, so the fan also gets bigger.

The good thing about the system is that both elements are cooled independently and there is no heat bubble in the central area. We do not appreciate the cooling system in the VRM area just above the battery, it is also true that, being a laptop with not too many demands, you can afford these luxuries. Despite the small space, it is a system that works really well, obtaining around 66 degrees at low-medium load and around 88 at maximum load. Then we will see in more detailed numerical terms in the next test section.

Battery life

Another key aspect when analyzing this MSI PS63 Modern 8RC, will be the battery and the duration it offers. At first, we already see that it is quite large in size, occupying practically 1/3 of the total space inside the PC.

When with a total of 4 cells made of Lithium-Polymer with a total of 80.25 Wh and no less than 5380 mAh. Some benefits that according to the manufacturer will give us, in the best case 16 hours of autonomy. In our case, making normal use of it, browsing, installed games with the screen brightness halfway has established a mark of approximately 10 hours approximately (which is not bad and far exceeds the autonomies that lately We are used to the gaming laptops that come in. Although this is our data, depending on the use you may have better or worse records.

Performance tests and games

After reviewing the design and performance theories of the MSI PS63 Modern 8RC, the least we could do is see it in action and get numerical results of everything, so let's go there.

SSD performance

First off, let's start by benchmarking the Samsung SSD to see if the results match what the paper says. To do this, we have used the CristalDiskMark 6.0.2 software.

As we can see the Samsung PM981 SSD borders on the 3000 MB / s and 1800 MB / s of read and write promised. We see no need to change to a new one. We are very happy for the choice of MSI?

Benchmarks and synthetic tests CPU and GPU

We leave the SSD alone and go to see the result of the typical synthetic tests in which we will measure the performance of the GPU and CPU. As always, we will use the PCMark 8 and 3DMark programs in the Time Spy and Fire Strike tests.

Gaming performance

We know that it is not a laptop mainly oriented to gaming, but who does not like to see how their future laptop performs in this field? Of course, the tests have been carried out in the only available resolution of Full HD and with the graphics somewhat lower than normal as you can understand.

As we can see the performance in gaming is not its strong point. We have an average of 30 FPS in the vast majority of games. The incorporation of the Nvidia dedicated graphics card is for a reason:

Temperatures

Finally we leave you a table with all the temperatures obtained during our test processing. To force the MSI PS63 Modern 8RC, we have used Prime 95 software to stress the CPU and Furmark software to stress the GPU.

MSI PS63 Modern 8RC Repose Maximum performance
CPU 41 ºC 88 ºC
GPU 40 ºC 84 ºC

software

True Color is a regular among MSI pre-installed software. It is an application that allows us to choose between several profiles: gamer, anti blue light, sRGB, for design, office or film. It is quite useful if you don't have a good caliper at home.

Although the application that you will use the most will be Creator Center. With it you can optimize the main design applications, monitor at all times the use and temperature of the processor, graphics, RAM and disk. It also allows you to customize the touchpad speed and the type of charge on our USB connection. In other words, a very useful application that gathers everything in the same application. So yes!

Final words and conclusion about MSI PS63 Modern 8RC

The MSI PS63 Modern is one of the laptops that we liked the most after a week of use. Its 15-inch IPS screen with Full HD resolution, 16 gb of RAM, 4 GB GDDR5 dedicated GTX 1050 graphics card, an SSD + HDD combo and a very compact design make it an ideal choice for content creators and graphic designers.

At the performance level it works very well. It must be remembered that it incorporates a low-consumption quad-core processor (Intel-U Series) that works very well to have a long autonomy. But it's not as powerful as a six-core i7-9750h, and this for rendering tasks will cost you more work. But it also does it well.

The NVMe SSD provides us with enough speed to have a very fast system. We also have a hard drive that will be ideal for storing all our data or heavier applications.

We recommend reading the best laptops on the market

We really liked that the access to the components is very fast and you can expand tango memory, SSD and SATA drive. We liked this a lot because many computers are limited: memory soldered, SSD soldered or that have difficult access. A great surprise!

We are at the MSI PS63 in a price range that starts at 1199 euros up to the top of the range at 1499 euros (the model analyzed). The big difference between the cheapest and this, is that the larger version has a dedicated Nvidia GTX 1050 graphics card. Is it really worth the outlay? If you are going to edit video it does compensate you, but if it is only photography with the most normal version you are more than good.

A few days ago they added a version with GTX 1650 for 1700 euros.
