In the smartphone world, the OnePlus 5 was one of the most anticipated models of the year. Although after its launch, some criticisms of its camera have been heard in dark scenes, but for the rest it makes it one of the best smartphones on the market.
OnePlus is a Chinese brand that stands out for launching good smartphones at fair prices. The OnePlus 5, although at a higher price than usual, still maintains a price policy below the various high-end of the market, offering quality features.
Oneplus 5 technical specifications
This new model has come under criticism both for design, price, lack of OIS, and lack of IP68 certification, among others. But since the negative points do not only matter, the positive ones also matter, such as a fantastic 6 or 8 GB of RAM and a top-of-the-range processor, among other elements that make it a true high-end smartphone.
Unboxing and design
We find an elegant but at the same time minimalist presentation. On its cover, the most notable is the number 5 in the lower middle area and the OnePlus logo on the top of the box. While on the back we have a serial number, a specific model and barcodes. We continue!
What do we find inside? Except for the lack of headphones Nothing new! The bundle consists of:
- OnePlus 5.DASH charger. Type-C power cord. Extractor for nanoSIM DUAL tray. Quick guide.
The OnePlus 5 uses a 5.5-inch Optical AMOLED screen with FullHD (1920 × 1080) resolution with DCI-P3 technology. The processor that it incorporates is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 with four Kryo cores at 2.35 GHz and another 4 at 1.9 GHz, accompanied by the Adreno 540 GPU.
It has 6 or 8 GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 64 or 128 of internal storage of the UFS 2.1 Dual Lane type.
Being the photograph of one of the great focuses of the new OnePlus 5, we have a double camera with Sony sensors, custom developed, 16 megapixels with focal aperture of f / 1.7 and 20 megapixels with a focal aperture of f / 2.6. The front camera is 16 megapixels.
In addition, it includes a 3300 mAh battery with Dash Charge, front fingerprint sensor with release in 0.2 seconds, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, CAT12 / 3CA, 3.5mm Jack and Android 7.1.1 with Oxygen OS interface.
Hardware and design
One of the great criticisms of the OnePlus 5 is, without a doubt, its design that, for many, is considered a copy of the iPhone 7 Plus. In truth, when analyzing it, we realize that after all the similarities are not so many, with the camera being the most similar element. Of the rest, on the front an evolution of the OnePlus 3T is noted, while on the back a combination of the iPhone 7 Plus, the Huawei P10 and other features of its own stands out.
Overall, it's a sleek smartphone, with excellent build quality, very solid, but nevertheless quite slippery, which is why I recommend using a protective cover.
On the front we find the 5.5-inch AMOLED screen, the 16-megapixel front camera, the brightness and proximity sensors, the earpiece, the fingerprint sensor and two capacitive buttons.
On the left side, there is the volume control button and the Alert Slider, while on the right side there is the on / off button and the Nano-SIM card slot.
There are no items above it, and below it are the speaker, main microphone, 3.5mm jack and USB Type-C connector.
Finally, on the back, we find the double camera, a secondary microphone, the double LED flash and the brand's identifying logo.
The display, which has been another much-discussed component, is identical to that of the OnePlus 3 / 3T and offers good colors and good image quality. As a negative point, it should be noted the poor performance it provides on the street under sunlight, the reading being somewhat affected. In the test model, only a very mild 'jelly effect' is noticed that is almost imperceptible.
At the sound level, the speaker is quite good, reproducing loud sounds without distortion.
OnePlus 5 highlights
Although wrapped in some controversy, the OnePlus 5 brings some differentiating features that make it an excellent smartphone.
RAM
The OnePlus 5 was released in two versions, varying the RAM and internal storage configuration. The base version comes with 6 GB of RAM + 64 GB of internal storage (which we have analyzed) and the other version offers 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage.
The 8GB version of RAM offers a creepy amount of memory and promises generous multitasking which we'll talk about later.
Alert Slider
When the Alert Slider was announced on the OnePlus 2 , users were satisfied that an Android brand had finally opted for this solution, in addition to generating the curiosity of other users.
After several days of use you will realize that the use of this button is very useful, which allows you to mute the smartphone quickly and easily.
The Alert Slider has 3 positions, and allows you to select normal mode, do not disturb mode and silent mode with a single button slide. In the configuration you can customize each of the modes to choose what types of sounds should be played and what notifications should be displayed.
Snapdragon 835 and 128 GB of internal storage
In addition to the enormous amount of RAM, the OnePlus 5 is accompanied by one of the best processors on the market, offering excellent performance.
At the internal storage level, the OnePlus 5 also follows the market trend, offering 64 GB or 128 GB of internal storage, enough to store all the data, photos and videos you need.
Dual camera
Also accompanying market trends at this point, the OnePlus 5 brings a dual 16-megapixel Sony sensor camera with f / 1.7 focal aperture and 20 megapixels with f / 2.6 focal aperture.
The OnePlus 5 camera promises to take good photos, however, for many users, the camera was also a point with some disappointments, as OnePlus equipped its high-end with EIS, rather than OIS, in addition to being left out of laser focus..
Dash Charge
At a time when batteries are little evolving, it is important to find strategies to extend the time of use of smartphones. Thus, fast charging technologies emerged that allow, in a small space of time, the charging of a large part of the battery.
Dash Charge is the fast charging technology developed by OnePlus and which promises to charge the smartphone quickly. In our tests we have been able to verify that for a recommended use of the battery it is very important to use the Dash Charge, otherwise it will not have the same effect with a powerbank or with a generic charger.
Android 7.1.1 with a Pure Android design
The OnePlus 5 comes with Android 7.1.1, with an OxygenOS interface. This ROM is very similar to the well-known "pure Android", managing to mix a strong customization component in the style of those that we could find in CyanogenMod.
System customization
Among these customization options, we can find, for example, the light or dark theme, the choice of button color and the highlighted text, choosing what each capacitive button will do when giving it a touch, long touch or double touch, set the gesture control system, customize the Alert Slider, and customize the status bar, among many other options.
Display options
In the display options, in addition to the traditional night and reading modes, we can calibrate the screen with the Standard, sRGB, DCI-P3 and color customization modes. There is also the “Raise screen” mode that, whenever you lift the smartphone, displays the time and notifications, despite the fact that this mode is considered very consumer of the battery.
Game mode
In the advanced options of OxygenOS, a curious mode entitled "Play, do not disturb" has been introduced, ideal for those who want to play without being disturbed by a notification.
From this mode, which can be activated from the notification bar, the system blocks notifications (with the exception of calls and alarms) and blocks the capacitive buttons. Thus, a list of applications in which the user wants the system to automatically execute this mode at startup can be defined.
Recent application management
Although RAM is not a problem of this smartphone, the OnePlus 5 has introduced the “Recent application management” mode, which offers two options: 'Normal cleaning' or 'Deep cleaning'. These options directly influence the aggressiveness with which the system deals with background processes.
Edit tag and actions by long click
One of the curious options is the option to change the name of the label of an application, which is nothing more than changing the name with which that application will be displayed. In addition, Android 7.1 shortcuts are also available for some applications such as Settings and Chrome.
Double tap to activate the screen
One of the things brands have abandoned with fingerprint sensors is the double tap to unlock the screen. Although a simple tap on the fingerprint sensor is enough to unlock the smartphone, sometimes we just want to see the notifications, giving this double tap to activate the screen.
The OxygenOS ROM
Despite the fact that the ROM is fully functional and without any serious errors, in recent times there have been reports of various problems with this smartphone. Although some, such as the "jelly effect", are hardware problems, many others require only a software update to be resolved.
Considering the number of small bugs that have come up, I would risk saying that the OnePlus 5 was released with software that could be considered a beta, with early adopters serving as beta testers for a ROM that should soon be be much more mature and optimized.
performance
At the performance level, everything on the OnePlus 5 is fast and smooth. All applications open instantly and without refusing any task. Of course, when using the Snapdragon 835, which we already know so well from other models, this performance should not be a surprise.
But really, what really came as a surprise to multitasking is the 6GB of RAM. The amount of memory that is available and not running out is truly incredible. You can easily play a game and leave it running in the background and, the next day, when you start the game it will continue at exactly the same point, even though a few hours and enough processes have passed.
This is the point that will most fascinate users and that allows a carefree use without the system having to close any process.
Although there has been a lot of controversy surrounding the OnePlus 5 benchmark results, there really is actually a kind of automatic "performance mode" that unlocks the full potential of the processor to test.
In reality, the OnePlus 5 only uses all the resources available in the test, not using any overclocking at any time. This result is, therefore, obtained through the operation of the processor to the top of its capabilities, a process that is obtained, for example, in heavier games.
First level front camera, rear a step behind the high range
Being one of the main focuses in the presentation of the OnePlus 5, this was also one of the most criticized points. After promises of a fantastic camera, along with the announcement of a partnership with DxO Labs, expectations have not been met.
But the OnePlus 5 camera is very good but does not border on excellence. It is a camera that is well above average, however, we all expected it to compete with the Samsung Galaxy S8, iPhone 7/8 or Google Pixel… but the reality has been different.
The camera application is quite simple, being divided into the following options:
- Photo Video Portrait Pro Mode Time Lapse Slow Motion Panorama
The pro mode stands out, which, in addition to the usual manual controls, presents a leveler and a graph with information such as ISO, aperture and white balance.
During the day, the photographs capture good colors, show a good level of detail and also have a good focus. In these conditions, the photos are at the level of other high-end mobiles, although sometimes slight faults in random detail of the elements that are in the background are noticed.
Another highlight is the portrait mode. This was quite worked to use both cameras to the maximum and achieve a good final result.
If there is a big Achilles heel in the cameras of smartphones, it is night photography. With the launch of the OnePlus 5, the Chinese brand promised a great improvement at this point, which was not confirmed.
In general, the photos are actually good, reflect light well, and the performance is very satisfactory. However, it is still far from what was promised.
As usual, the performance of the camera should improve in the coming years, with optimization updates.
At last we come to another sensitive point, the video. To the displeasure of many fans, the OnePlus 5 did not bring OIS stabilization, opting for EIS stabilization. If this was already a disappointment to fans, it got worse even when the EIS was found to be locked on 4K recording. The company has already said that, in a future update, the EIS will also reach 4K resolution, although it has not given dates for this update and at the moment we do not have it activated.
Autonomy
Previously we have said that this is an excellent smartphone for multitasking due to its enormous amount of RAM, although the question remains whether this does not affect autonomy.
It is true that background applications always use a considerable extra battery. However, and considering intensive use, the OnePlus 5 always lasts a day of battery with data always connected, frequent games, navigation in Chrome, constantly replying to messages, calls, and more.
For users with a more moderate use, this smartphone should easily reach a day and a half without any problem.
At the charging level, the OnePlus 5 brings the well-known Dash Charge technology that charges the battery faster, taking around 1 hour . And is that when you get used to this technology you can not live without it?
Final words and conclusion about OnePlus 5
Considering it's a high-end one, the OnePlus 5 lacks some features like IP68 certification, laser focus, or even OIS. However, while it still needs some good optimizations, over time, as with the OnePlus 3 / 3T , the updates will try to hone in on both performance, autonomy, and on-camera.
At the performance level, there is nothing to point out, with the OnePlus 5 you will execute all the tasks that you have proposed without any problems. The 6 GB of RAM allow a brilliant multitasking, being possible to use it being totally unconcerned with the closing of the processes.
At the interface level, OxygenOS was never one of the best ROMs for Android, however, it has improved throughout this year so much that I have fallen in love. And it follows the lines of pure Android but adds its personalization touch, very much in the style of what CyanogenMod offers. You will like!
We recommend reading the best smartphone with camera
In relation to the camera, it still has a long way to go before adjustments and optimizations to make it truly one of the best on the market. Currently, he already takes good photos, however, he still has some lack of punctual detail of the elements in the background.
In terms of autonomy, the battery lasts without great care on the part of the user a whole day of intensive use. If for some reason the battery is not enough, the Dash Charge also resets a large part of the battery.
The screen transmits colors well and has good image quality, however it has poor readability in the sun, which can make it difficult to use on the street during the day.
In summary, although it is not perfect and lacks some details, the OnePlus 5 offers some of the best components on the market without giving up a good experience of use.
Many of the reviews are unfounded, although it still has a long way to go, updates in the coming months will hone in on all the details, making the OnePlus 5 even better. Currently you can buy it for 499 euros in OnePlus 5 or in Chinese stores by offer. But remember… this last option will not process the OnePlus guarantee, but you will have to deal with these stores…
