With the OnePlus 7 PRO, the company repositions one of its terminals at the top, thanks to a set of well-kept and outstanding features, something that the latest launched models lacked. The OnePlus 7 PRO gets on the bandwagon of terminals that dispense with both the hated notch and the hole embedded in the screen and makes use of the retractable selfie camera.

But the thing is not there and it is that, in addition, it has an AMOLED screen at 90 Hz, three rear cameras, a fingerprint reader under the screen and power to spare when mounting a Snapdragon 855. Let's see how it behaves after several weeks of use.

OnePlus 7 Pro technical specifications

Unboxing of the OnePlus 7 PRO

The company continues to take care of both the design of its terminals and its packaging and accessories. White and red colors are the main colors. In turn, the front of the box has a huge number seven screen printed. The back only specifies some brief feature.

Once opened, inside the box we find the OnePlus 7 PRO, holstered instead of having a sticker attached to its front, the power adapter, the charging cable, a transparent silicone case, the SIM card extractor, a quick guide and stickers.

Sober and elegant design

We are in this OnePlus 7 PRO Pro with a great finish and design that lives up to what is expected of it. On the one hand, we find the traditional aluminum body embedded between two, a glass front and rear protected by Gorilla Glass 5; On the other hand, its curved edges on both the rear and screen sides offer a great feeling and ergonomics when holding it in the hand, although it inevitably reduces grip when possible slipping of the hand, an issue for which I usually resort to the covers. silicone even if it ruins the design. These curves on the sides gradually disappear until they end in a more rectilinear edge at the ends of the terminal.

The ergonomics of the OnePlus 7 PRO Pro are combined with contained measures thanks to the reduction of the front edges. In total we find dimensions of 75.9 x 162.2 x 8.8 millimeters. As a counterpart, the weight of 206 grams is slightly higher than most terminals of this style have accustomed us, although it is true that over time we did not notice any feeling of having a heavier terminal than the account.

One of the most striking features of the front is its 19.5: 9 aspect screen and a large useful area of 88%, without having the odious notch, a fingerprint sensor or the famous circle present in other terminals. The edges around the screen are tiny, just a couple of millimeters. The technology that makes it possible to have such a clean front is the motorized front camera that appears from the upper edge, like a periscope, when we want to take a frontal photograph. A mechanism that, surprisingly, acts quite quickly, and which, according to the company, has a durability of around 300, 000 uses, a sufficiently high useful life. The good work of the company with this mechanism is noted when considering that, in the event of a fall, the front camera hides automatically to avoid damage.

Along with the motorized camera, the front edge houses the noise canceling microphone. As usual, the left edge houses the volume button with a function to raise or lower it, while on the upper right side we find a button to change the sound mode and immediately below the on / off button. Finally, at the bottom edge is the tray to insert two nanoSIM cards without the possibility of inserting any microSD card. In this same area, the microUSB type C connector, the microphone for calls and the multimedia speaker are located.

The back is distinguished by its difficult to describe Nebula Blue color, with a metallic bluish appearance but which turns tonality when moving the device, something that is increasingly fashionable among manufacturers. In addition, it is possible to find the OnePlus 7 PRO in two other colors: Mirror Gray and Almond, gray and almond respectively.

AMOLED screen and 1440p resolution

The OnePlus 7 Pro mounts a 6.67-inch AMOLED screen, to which the company has added the suffix Fluid to emphasize the fluidity with which the content that is displayed on it moves thanks to the greater screen refresh. up to 90Hz. We also find a great resolution of 1440 x 3120 pixels that results in a really high density of 515 pixels per inch.

Regarding the quality of the screen, we must recognize that it stands out in many aspects, achieving a really good color reproduction that reproduces the DCI-P3 and sRGB color gamut, although it is not the best screen of all in this appearance.

It is possible to choose between different color calibration options in the terminal settings, being able to choose between Intense, Nature (although it should be translated as Natural) and Advanced. The first increases saturation and contrast to show more vivid colors, the second maintains colors more in line with the sRGB standard and the advanced option allows you to choose between several color spaces and we can slide the color temperature.

We cannot forget within this section the compatibility of the OnePlus 7 Pro with HDR10 + that allows us to offer a better dynamic range in apps that allow it, such as Netflix. The best possible experience if we want to play a movie or series.

As with most AMOLED-type displays, the contrast and tone of the colors is one of the highlights, so much so that they tend to be displayed more intensely than normal and not as true to reality. On this occasion , the system has been configured to offer a slightly softer tone and contrast that offer a more reliable image. The combination of all these factors results in a detailed and very sharp image.

In other sections such as viewing angles, we have been able to verify that the performance is perfect and there is no noticeable color variation. On the other hand, it must be recognized that by activating the 90Hz refresh rate during the use of the terminal, this smoothness and better transition between windows or during games can be noticed almost instantly, something that the Razer Phone have already revealed. Obviously opting for 90Hz instead of 60Hz has a small penalty in battery consumption of around 0.4% more than normal.

Another really important part nowadays is brightness, especially in the summer months when the sun is really strong. In high-end terminals is where the effort to maximize brightness is most noticeable. The OnePlus 7 Pro is capable of offering, normally, a maximum brightness of up to 560 nits, a fairly good brightness and that allows you to greatly appreciate what the screen shows. However, if the terminal detects strong light, it is capable of activating the high brightness mode and reaching up to 650 nits of brightness. A really interesting mode, but one that penalizes the battery consumption enormously. In contrast, the minimum brightness is around 2 nits. A brightness low enough not to disturb in dark environments.

Sound

One of my favorite features that I like to find in the smartphone is the double multimedia speaker or stereo speaker. In this case, the OnePlus 7 Pro incorporates one on the front and one on the bottom edge. This offers greater immersion and sound. It is true that despite this stereo system and the Dolby Atmos certificate, the sound does not surround you like in other smartphones but it is more than enough to play music or videos. In terms of quality, the sound reproduced sounds crisp and clear without intermingling the different frequencies too much, in turn the good work of the bass is appreciated. The volume at maximum sounds quite powerful and without any distortion.

For use with headphones, we will need some with a microUSB type C or wireless connection, since it does not have a 3.5mm jack connection. Fortunately the quality by these means continues to be maintained at a good level, with great sound quality and balanced.

OS

OnePlus has always bet strongly to keep its terminals updated at the software level, and more specifically what version of the operating system is concerned. The OnePlus 7 Pro brings Android 9 Pie unsurprisingly, along with the Oxygen 9.5.5 customization layer. The company's mime for the most advanced users is such that it is even possible today to update the OnePlus 7 Pro to the beta 3 of Android Q for those eager to try new features, as long as it is assumed that it may have its own flaws from a beta version.

Focusing on the stock version, Oxygen feels like a simple and comfortable style operating system to use while having great fluidity between its transitions. Much of its advantages come from creating a layer of customization really similar to pure Android, without overloaded or superfluous add-ons.

Most of the novelties can be seen especially in the settings section where the Oxygen incorporates some extra features to customize the different aspects of its screen such as the refresh setting, the ambient mode to see messages with the screen off, the game mode to boost performance when opening a game, navigation gestures or parallel applications if we want to duplicate an app. As is the norm in Oxygen, among its settings we also find a Boost mode of the company's own and that is activated by default that serves to accelerate the use of RAM.

On the other hand, with the exception of OnePlus and Google's own apps and utilities, there is no pre-installed junk or bloatware application that is unnecessary for the user, something that is appreciated and from which other companies should learn.

In short, even with the light OnePlus layer, the system runs robustly and we have not found any notable flaws, something difficult today. Its fluidity together with the sensation given by the 90 Hz is the most remarkable aspect.

Performance of

The OnePlus 7 Pro has, as was already known, the best Qualcomm processor available, the eight-core Snapdragon 855 with four cores Kryo 485 at 1.8 GHz, three of them at 2.4 Ghz and one last at 2.84 Ghz for occasions when a power boost. This is accompanied by the Adreno 640 GPU and 6, 8 or 12 GB of LPDDR4X RAM, one of the fastest currently. In total, we are talking about a brown beast in processing issues that achieve great performance in any current mobile section, whether in games or through the use of applications. In the same way, despite having an optimized operating system, this high power and RAM helps to increase that fluidity and avoid noticing any pull during its use. The result thrown by AnTuTu in our analyzed model of 12 GB of RAM gave a score of 352067. A really high score and topping this year's list of mobile devices.

The games are enjoyed twice in the OnePlus 7 Pro, on the one hand there is no drop in frames and on the other, the 90 HZ feel great in terms of fluidity of animations.

The available internal storage is UFS 3.0 and you can find both 128GB and 256GB. One of the virtues of this flash memory is its great speed, which together with power and refreshment, achieve a perfect combination.

Unlocking with a fingerprint under the screen is a recent technology and in some terminals, it did not finish working 100%. On this occasion and with the most refined technology, we have been able to see how the unlocking will be carried out quickly and accurately. Only on a rare occasion, we have had to insist a little more. The face unlock has not been given as much hype but we have been able to verify how the result is satisfactory even in low light. The only downside is having to wait for the camera to come out. For the photos it does not matter so much, but for each unlock, it is somewhat cumbersome.

Cameras

The triple rear camera is one of the striking aspects of the OnePlus 7 Pro for the interest it aroused. This section was good in previous models, but there were rumors that the Chinese company wanted to breastfeed on its most premium smartphone for 2019.

The OnePlus 7 Pro has a 48 megapixel CMOS BSI main camera with Sony IMX586 Exmor RS sensor with 1.6 focal length and 0.8 micron pixel size, which is one of the smallest there is. This sensor combines four small pixels into one larger than 1.6 microns, thus giving the final image more light and sharpness. In the end, a 12-megapixel but higher-quality image is created. This camera features hybrid laser focus, Dual Pixel phase detection, 7-element lens, and optical stabilization.

The secondary camera has 8 megapixels with 2.4 focal aperture, 1 micron pixel size, image stabilization and whose main function is its 3x telephoto Zoom. Finally, the third 117-degree wide-angle camera has 16 megapixels and a focal aperture of 2.2.

The main camera has a lot of detail and really good sharpness in broad daylight. Colors are faithfully displayed and only occasionally appear somewhat washed out, with a slight lack of saturation. On the other hand, dynamic contrast is not well defended in some situations, even in automatic mode, so it is sometimes necessary to use manual mode for different times. Autofocus is a section that works wonders in bright environments.

The wide-angle camera manages to considerably increase the range of the image while maintaining a fairly good level of detail and colors similar to the main camera. The barrel effect that curves the sides normally caused by this type of camera is largely remedied by software. The telephoto objective maintains composure and achieves an acceptable level of detail, although it is not for shooting rockets.

Portrait mode is quite well achieved in this OnePlus 7 Pro. Generally the result achieved by blurring the background of the focused object is really good, generating a cut between both planes that is well defined and successful. Only occasionally, such as when arms are lagging behind, does the camera fail to focus.

In night scenes, the brightness achieved by the main camera is really surprising thanks to its 1.6 focal length. A good amount of detail is still appreciated and the colors are faithful enough. With the other two sensors, all the virtues of the main camera are ruined and both detail, color and lighting are diminished.

The front camera mounts a Sony IMX471 Exmor RS sensor with 16 megapixels, 2.0 focal aperture and a 1 micron pixel size and electronic image stabilizer. The snapshots appear with a fairly good level of detail even without being excellent. Furthermore, the colors and contrast are largely displayed correctly, at the level of the main camera. In night scenes, the front sensor defends itself but the image is in poor detail.

The OnePlus 7 Pro can capture video in up to 4K and 60fps. The quality obtained is good in all aspects, although somewhat lower than that offered in photographs, highlighting the possibility of making a good zoom thanks to the secondary camera and the good work of the optical stabilizer. All this in well-lit environments, in dark settings the quality suffers a lot, sometimes vibrating the image and obtaining a lot of noise. A very well achieved section is the microphone, which captures a reliable, clear and nuanced sound.

Finally, it is worth highlighting the simple design that the camera application has with the typical main modes for photo, video, portrait, landscape or professional mode. Among others such as slow motion at 240 fps, timelapse or night landscape. Switching between cameras is also easy and all you have to do is choose between the lower icons. In the app settings it is possible to find a multitude of configuration options, something that is always appreciated.

Battery

Luckily we went from the time of the 3000 mAh batteries to higher capacities, such as the 4000 mAh that the OnePlus 7 Pro has. A capacity widely used today under the gigantic screens that are usually mounted. This section is one of the things that most often interest me on a smartphone, so shortly after starting to analyze it, I wanted to put it to the test by making normal use with social networks, web browsing and multimedia content playback from 100% battery. Unfortunately the results have not been so satisfactory for me. The OnePlus 7 Pro managed to last a day and little more use with between 6 and 7 hours of screen. A low autonomy, on the one hand, but also somewhat understandable if you look at the hours of screen used. However, I expected better numbers. It should be noted that the OnePlus 7 Pro sucks more battery by making greater use of the 4G or the ambient display option. Appearance like 90 Hz drains the battery negligibly.

As it could not be otherwise, the OnePlus 7 Pro has fast charge with a 30W charger that manages to charge 50% of the battery in around 25 minutes and the complete battery in one hour and ten minutes. Unfortunately, wireless charging is not included. It is something not so much lacking, but those who use it regularly will notice but it is already known that companies scratch where they can.

Connectivity

The OnePlus 7 Pro includes most of the expected features such as low-power Bluetooth 5.0 LE, 802.11 and 5 Ghz Wi-Fi bands, Wi-Fi MiMO. A-GPS, Beidou, Galileo, GLONASS, GPS, NFC, VoLTE with the only absence of the FM Radio and the audio Jack connector, which means that you have to settle for using the new USB Type-C headphones or using Bluetooth.

OnePlus 7 Pro conclusion and final words

OnePlus is a brand that almost never disappoints and that has been seen in its little journey since it was born. This year with the launch of the OnePlus 7 Pro, the company has launched one of its best flagships. We are talking about a device that enters the eyes from the first moment and its continued use continues to leave a good taste in the mouth.

The OnePlus 7 Pro undoubtedly has a really good design with its all-screen and attractive screen that leaves no one indifferent and that it is possible to grace by hiding the front camera on the upper edge. A technology that has been proven to work well and quickly. We must highlight other very good sections such as its fluid screen and its great brightness or stereo sound, or sections that show that we are dealing with a premium terminal. The performance falls within expectations and is not something that surprises as much. One last positive point is its camera, which achieves great image quality and possibilities of use, even in dark environments, not so much its front camera.

We recommend reading our guide to the best high-end smartphones on the market

Personally, the lowest section has been its autonomy, which is good but not as much as I expected from it. A day of autonomy seemed scarce. It is a section that will remain pending for future phones. Finally, it is necessary to take into account the absence of aspects such as wireless charging or audio jack, something that may tend to disappear, but which is still difficult to do without.

With the increase in quality and features, the price has also increased, a section from which previous models were distinguished, although it is still quite competitive when compared to other high-end terminals of the competition. The 6GB and 128GB version is priced around € 700 and the 8GB and 256GB version around € 785.
