Just five months after the release of its predecessor, the OnePlus 6T hit the market with some improvements over there, some changes over there, and other features that haven't even changed. The biggest new features are the increase in battery life, the inclusion of the fingerprint sensor on the screen, improvements at the software level and some design changes. In general, like almost all new versions of a product, we find a terminal that is supposed to be more polished in every aspect than the original OnePlus 6. Let's take a look at it and see if it makes as good an impression as its older brother.

OnePlus 6T Technical Features

Unboxing

Each company maintains and possesses its characteristic aesthetics. In the case of OnePlus, it was distinguished almost from the beginning for its choice of red and white colors. It maintains that design in its box, which stands out for the almost total use of white, with the exception of the number six large screen-printed and matte on the front. Only the brand's logo breaks something with this minimalism.

The interior continues to surprise by the careful arrangement and organization of the different components. It is appreciated that a gel case is included, it may not be the best protection for a smartphone, but of course, having one from the first days is highly appreciated. It is curiously common in rather small companies, not being so in larger ones. Something incomprehensible. Together we find inside the box:

  • OnePlus 6T. MicroUSB type C cable. Power adapter. Audio jack female to microUSB type C adapter. Gel case. SIM tray extractor. Quick guide.

Design

The OnePlus 6T maintains a design similar to the previous version in regards to the curved glass on the back and the frame that protects the side edges, made of metal. Changes are beginning to emerge with regard to size and weight, which increase slightly to 74.8 x 157.5 x 8.2 mm and 185 grams. Somewhat larger but barely noticeable measurements. The weight has also gained its few grams, and even so, it is not something that is excessively noticeable in the hand. Something to be thankful for, especially when you consider that it almost reaches 200 grams.

The culprit for this increase is none other than the screen with an 86% usable surface, which grows to 6.41 inches. The design does not differ much and a screen with practically minimal edges is maintained, except for the lower edge, which has been reduced but not at the level of the others. The biggest change is undoubtedly noticeable in the beloved notch. This happens to be the minuscule size of a front camera. I suppose that simile is better than the one used in English where for them it has tear size. In the notch we also find accompanying the front camera, the proximity sensor. The call speaker sits just above the notch. The notification LED, for reasons I don't know, is gone, too bad.

The rear, by dispensing with the fingerprint sensor, only has the double rear camera in the upper central part. Side by side vertically and the led flash immediately below. Just a centimeter away from the flash, the company logo is screen printed. This model has the colors Midnight Black and Mirror Black, or what is the same: black and matt gray.

We go to the edges where we see little news. At the top follows the typical noise canceling microphone.

The left has a tray for two nanoSIM cards in the upper part and in the central part the volume buttons. A rather uncomfortable position for me at first, it is difficult to get the point if you are used to using smartphones with the buttons on the other side. I probably had the same problem with the previous model, it is something that I do not remember, but I am sure that I have never liked the button located on the upper right edge to activate or deactivate the sound.

In the OnePlus 6T this button remains, and it is true that it can be useful if you are aware that it is there and it is necessary. In my personal case, I have been using silent mode for so long, so easily accessible from the Android drop-down menu. Some will say that the button is a faster shortcut, but as in this life, it is somewhat subjective. I see it as useless as the button to launch the Google assistant in some LG model.

Under the sound button, there is only the on / off button, which has been slightly centered to make it easier to reach. Finally, the bottom edge houses the call microphone on one side, the Type-C microUSB port in the center, and the multimedia speaker on the other side. The audio jack disappears permanently.

It should be noted the protection with Gorilla Glass 6 that the glass body of this OnePlus 6 has. It also has resistance to water, in the event of a drop in this liquid although, curiously, its IP certification is not mentioned anywhere. It seems that the company has preferred to add this resistance but without spending the money that such certification entails.

screen

As I mentioned in the upper section, the OnePlus 6T mounts a 6.41-inch screen and 19.5: 9 AMOLED type with a Full HD + resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels, which gives a density of 403 pixels. The screen has a really good richness of colors, as well as its black level, characteristic of this type of screen. In adjustment we can calibrate the screen to our liking or choosing one of the gamut that it offers us such as the sRGB or DCI-P3. Perhaps this screen does not reach the level of other top of the range, higher price, but it is very close to them. The viewing angles seem good and we have not appreciated color tinting.

Outdoors we have seen that the brightness, which ranges from 400 nits to 450 in automatic mode, is more than enough to be used outdoors without problems. It is true that in winter the testing is not as effective as in summer, with the powerful sun of southern Spain.

In settings, in addition to being able to calibrate the screen, we can choose if we want to hide the notch, adding a black band and we can configure the screen for night mode, reading mode or full-screen display of the apps we want. The ambient display is another interesting setting to decide what to display while the terminal is in idle mode. It is a substitute for the old Always-On.

Sound

One of the aspects that throws the most back when buying a smartphone occurs when we play a video or song and the sound sounds muted or too low even at maximum volume. In the case of the OnePlus 6T that does not happen, its maximum volume is good enough to enjoy it, even if there is some background noise. And speaking of volume, another positive aspect is the different levels that there are from the minimum to maximum volume.

As for the sound quality, it sounds clearly and keeps the different frequencies at a good level. You couldn't expect less from him.

In settings we will have several settings to configure the sound to our liking through the equalizer or several default presets for both the normal speaker and the different types of headphones. A switch is also added to be able to alternate the sound between one system or another.

Sound through headphones continues to maintain fairly good quality with the adapter included in the box. When using other Type-C headphones, it may be necessary to activate OTG mode.

OS

It is true that the OnePlus 6 had Android in its Pie version 9.0, but that was after an update via OTA. This OnePlus 6T, on the other hand, already has this factory version. Something that was obviously to be expected by now. The system comes, in turn, customized by the well-known OxygenOS customization layer in version 9.0.7.

The set forms a perfect union, both the visual style and the performance exude the good work of the company. The style, by the way, is very similar to Android One or stock. It should also be noted the absence of bloatware or garbage apps that many companies put in. In this case, only two from the company itself are installed. One to interact with the OnePlus community and others to pass data from one OnePlus to another. Neither is intrusive and they are easily removable. Good point. Also noteworthy is the good optimization and fluidity of the operating system in general.

In settings we find some interesting additions such as gestures to interact with the system faster by drawing different symbols with the screen off; notifications and quick launch settings are added and, the most interesting inclusion, the game mode, which allows you to enjoy games calmly while helping the game to flow more smoothly.

performance

This is one of the aspects where we certainly did not find changes at the hardware level. The OnePlus 6T keeps the eight-core Snapdragon 845 inside with four of them at 2.8 GHz and another four at 1.8 GHz, which is still accompanied by the Adreno 630 GPU. A SoC that we have already known well in 2018. Powerful and with resources to spare for multitasking or the games available on the market without messing around. In AnTuTu the score given was 293982. Pretty good, but also below many models. Defeat 78% of smartphones but there is 22% that does not.

In the settings there is curiously an extra called Smart Boost, which is inside the OnePlus Laboratory setting, which is in beta state and is in charge of analyzing the most commonly used apps to speed up their opening.

Our model to analyze had 8 GB of RAM LPDDR4X although it is possible to find another model with 6 GB, and even another with 10 GB if we get the Mclaren version.

About storage, more of the same, our model had 128 GB of memory but there is another model with 256 GB.

On-screen fingerprint recognition is not that common in most smartphones yet, but it does point ways. Setting up the footprints in this case takes a little longer than normal because it needs more precision but once done the performance makes up for it. Ultimately, this technology is much more advanced than you might think, fingerprint recognition is almost always instantly recognized and unlocking is fast. Only on some occasions it has cost him an extra second or he has not succeeded the first time, perhaps due to the dirt on the screen. It is something that also happens occasionally in normal sensors and while this percentage is low, it means that everything is going great. There are several animations to choose from to view when you place your finger, and they are certainly great. That display is cooler than that of normal sensors, in that there is no discussion.

The other method of unlocking so in vogue in recent years is facial recognition, or face unlock. After trying it with the OnePlus 6T, I couldn't be more satisfied. The recognition made by the terminal is really good and the unlocking hardly takes an instant, even in dark places it still works well. If you wear sunglasses or there is a lot of darkness, it is already more difficult to get it. For at night, there is a setting that can be turned on to make the blank screen light up so that it has more lighting for easy recognition.

Cameras

The cameras of the OnePlus 6T have the peculiarity of not having changed their internal hardware but, as with the processor, they have worked to improve and optimize the software that manages the photographs.

Giving a review for those who did not know the previous model, this OnePlus 6T mounts in the back a Sony IMX519 Exmor RS of 16 megapixel CMOS type with 1.7 focal aperture and 1, 220 micron pixel size. The secondary camera, on the other hand, is a 20-megapixel Sony IMX376 Exmor RS, the same 1.7 focal length and a slightly smaller pixel size of 1 micron. Altogether it has some features such as continuous shooting, digital and optical zoom, digital and optical image stabilization, autofocus and HDR.

The photographs taken in daylight outdoors are attractive at first sight and have a lot of detail, although without being a reference. The colors, on the other hand, are shown in a vivid way but without appearing oversaturated, which is really good. In this regard it improves on its predecessor. The contrast is usually quite correct, only occasionally has room for improvement. With the dynamic range in automatic mode, its performance is irregular, in some situations we have appreciated its good work, especially with regard to portraying the sky correctly, but in other captures the result was not as satisfactory, also appreciable on all in the contrast of the sky.

Indoors, the OnePlus 6T's cameras continue to do a good job, which can be seen both in the level of detail and in the colors, which they continue to capture accurately and faithfully. In turn, the contrast also borders on the same level.

In night scenes, the sharpness offered by the cameras surprises again, as well as colors that despite being somewhat less saturated, achieves a faithful representation. Fortunately, the noise is not very aggressive either and it is only noticeable if you pay close attention. It is at night, when we have the option to activate the night mode, which what it basically does is take a long exposure shot. It is an option only recommended for static situations, without much movement, since anything that moves will appear blurry. This mode requires about 3 seconds to act. Once done successfully, you can see a little more lighting and sharpness. In general, it is an inadvisable option, except in some situations, since in itself, photos in normal mode already do a good job.

Portrait or Bokeh mode is really well done thanks to the work of the secondary camera. The blur between the object to focus and the background is very well defined, with hardly any errors. This effect works not only well with person but also with inanimate objects.

4K and 1080p video can be recorded at both 60 and 30 fps. To record in slow motion at 480 fps, 720p resolution is used.

4K quality offers good detail and appreciable sharpness, the same is true of colors and contrast, which are rendered correctly. Stabilization does a good job but only works at 30 fps.

The front selfie camera is again a 16-megapixel Sony IMX371 Exmor with 2.0 focal length and 1 micron pixel size. The quality of the photos is generally good but lower than expected. The camera captures good details, but sometimes it lacks sharpness. Colors appear correct, without being very vibrant or saturated. In low light situations or indoors, a thin layer of noise appears which may slightly detract from the end result.

The design of the camera app has many options and they are arranged precisely and clearly. In turn, many more configuration options can be found in the settings menu.

Battery

The battery in the OnePlus 6T has been increased by 400 mAh to a total of 3, 710 mAh. The increase in inches of the screen has made it possible to include a greater load but also at higher inches, more consumption.

In our normal and daily use tests with social networks, web content and multimedia, we have managed to reach a day and a half of autonomy with about 6 hours of screen. A good number of hours of screen but in terms of normal use, it could be something that could be improved. Luckily he is not one of those who arrive at the end of the day.

Fast charging works just as well or even better than previous models. The charge of 50% of battery I need about 25 minutes, and reach 100% in around an hour and five minutes. Unfortunately it does not have wireless charge.

Connectivity

Among the connectivity options we find: Bluetooth 5.0 LE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a / ac / b / g / n / 5GHz, MIMO, GLONASS, GPS, Beidou, Galileo, USB OTG, VoLTE and NFC.

Conclusion and final words of the OnePlus 6T

The OnePlus 6T is a clear evolution and improvement of a previous product that was already good in itself but lacked some tweaks. Fortunately, it can be said that practically all the changes are for the better, except for those who strongly want the audio jack connector.

We are not the most powerful smartphone or remarkable above others, but it can be said that it is a great phone that works like a shot, it has a nice design although it would have been good it has a higher screen ratio at this point.

We recommend you read the best high-end smartphones

The screen remains at its level but the great power of the multimedia speaker and the software improvement in the cameras is still appreciated, although it was not as much as expected at the end. The battery, on the other hand, has grown to match its largest screen. It performs well with its day and a half, but you can always expect further optimization in its autonomy.

The most announced feature of this model was the fingerprint unlock on the screen and we can say without a doubt that it works great, just like the face unlock. It is a preview of what we can see in the future when it is polished even more.

In general, we are talking about a terminal that can be included in the high range and that has many pros and few against. The not too high price also works in its favor, it can be found for € 549 in its 6GB + 128GB version and € 629.90 in its 8GB + 256GB version.
