Today is the turn for the review of the OnePlus 7, the normal version so to speak of the 7 Pro. A terminal that comes to succeed the OnePlus 6T, very similar in design and losing those curved sides of the Pro version. That yes, with a section Pretty impressive hardware thanks to a Smapdragon 855 and 6 or 8 GB of RAM to give us an impressive fluidity thanks to OxygenOS being a great option for gaming.
If you are thinking of purchasing this smartphone, take a look at this review where we tell you about our experience after a few weeks with it.
And before continuing, we must thank OnePlus for the trust in us for temporarily giving us their product to do this review.
OnePlus 7 technical characteristics
Unboxing
The OnePlus 7 has come to us in a presentation exactly like 99% of mobiles on the market, that is, a solid cardboard box very closely adjusted to the size of the mobile and in white. Let's keep in mind that the box is a little damaged because we are not the first to test it, it will come to you in perfect condition.
Inside the bundle we will find the following elements:
- OnePlus 7 Smartphone 20W Power Adapter USB Type-A - Type-CExtractor for SIM Tray User Guide Silicone Case
In this case we have not shown the silicone case in the photo, since it has not arrived in perfect condition. One of the problems with this type of cover is that it turns yellow quite quickly, and this is the reason, but hey, this problem is known to all of you.
Design: conservative with OnePlus essence
This OnePlus 7 is irreparable compared to the previous OnePlus 6T since in terms of design they are two very similar terminals. As always, the manufacturer has opted for a fairly conservative configuration compared to the Pro version, but always with full glass finishes on the back and sides.
For Europe we only have the dark gray or graphite color for this terminal. A color as we say conservative, but very successful for those users who are looking for something less casual and more serious than the noticeable gradients that many manufacturers introduce. Thanks to the glass, a quite striking mirror effect is also created. Only for the Asian market is another version available in red, a pity that it has not also been launched in our area for the most daring users.
An important detail is that the rear camera panel is quite out of the main plane, which makes the use of a cover very necessary to avoid fatal blows in the area. For the main part, we have a screen with Corning Gorilla Glass 6, the highest specification of hardness, with 2.5D edges and drop type notch.
The hand feeling is always very good, something almost widespread in all smartphones that use glass. It does not slip at all in the hand and its thinness makes us have a very good premium feeling at all times. Of course, as always the silicone case that is included turns yellow in the blink of an eye. At least this one has thicker and protruding edges to give an extra protection against falls.
The OnePlus 7 is the small version of the 7 Pro, and we quickly noticed this on its 6.41-inch screen with 19.5: 9 aspect ratio. The measures he signs are 74.8 mm wide, 157.7 mm high, 8.2 mm thick with a highly achieved weight of 182 g. It is a considerably smaller terminal and whose lateral edges are not curved, obtaining a useful surface of 85% that is not bad at all to incorporate notch. In any case, it does not give us the same feelings as the Pro's much-used space, which exceeds 90%. It is also very thin, and that is why the rear camera is very out, likewise, the somewhat smaller battery, 3700 mAh, facilitates these tight measurements.
Now we will go to see the sides of the OnePlus 7, because we have important news regarding the 6T. This translates into a double multimedia speaker located in the lower and upper area, greatly improving the sound quality compared to the previous generation and also with Dolby Atmos technology. Keep in mind that the upper speaker has its output on the front, while the lower one has it on the side.
In the lower area we have, of course, the USB Type C, while in the upper one we only have the microphone with noise cancellation. The right side for its part has the lock button and eye here, the switch to alternate the sound profiles of the terminal. This is something very interesting that OnePlus has kept, and allows an extra accessibility for the user. Finally, in the left area we find the volume button and the removable microSIM dual tray without storage expansion.
Something that we should highlight and not as a positive, is the fact of not having protection against water and dust in this terminal. It is something that we still accept in the mid-range, but on a mobile that went on the market for more than 500 euros, we believe that it should be improved. And as it happens lately in the OnePlus terminals, in this we do not have a 3.5 mm Jack either, so it is necessary to buy an adapter for USB C since it has not been included either.
Optic AMOLED display with notch
We go to see the most important multimedia section of the OnePlus 7, which will be the screen. And this time we have to refer again to the 6T, since it has not changed too much compared to the previous model.
So we have a display with 6.41-inch Optic AMOLED technology that gives us an FHD + resolution of 2340x1080p, giving us a density of 403 dpi, almost standard already in all terminals on the market except the most economical models. We have a fairly standard drop type notch in design and size, and that for reasons of space and size could not be omitted as it happened in the 7 Pro.
And we have an image quality according to what we should ask a high-end mobile, with a very good color representation and a very high contrast. It has an depth of 8 bits or 16.7 million colors and is capable of representing 100% of the DCI-P3 color space which is one of the highest in the multimedia segment. Similarly we have support for HDR10, something very interesting for gaming or content playback.
Perhaps something that would have been interesting and a very different aspect from the previous generation, would be to have a 90 Hz screen. This would be ideal for games, but the manufacturer has only chosen to put it on the all-powerful OnePlus 7 Pro. In any case, we see it as quite normal and understandable to be a "decaffeinated" version ·
Sound: dual stereo speaker and Dolby Atmos
The sound section has also improved a lot in this new generation of terminals. And is that now in the OnePlus 7 we have a double speaker system on the sides that gives us a very good quality stereo sound. It also includes Dolby Atmos surround sound technology for headphones.
It reaches a volume not too high, but more than enough to hear it clearly and without distortion, something that is quite common in terminals with a single speaker. In this way we also reach a few more notorious bass that for example come to play fable.
As usual, Dolby Atmos is implemented for use with headphones connected to USB Type-C, a digital output that benefits from this type of performance aimed at gaming and multimedia content playback. In general, the sound section is excellent, although it is not yet up to the task of purely gaming terminals such as the Razer Phone or similar.
Security systems: the fastest on the market
And this is another of the strongest sections of the terminals of the new generation Chinese brand and where this OnePlus 7 has not suffered any cuts compared to the Pro version, which is excellent news. Then we will have an on-screen fingerprint reader and our own facial recognition.
As always, I start by talking about your fingerprint reader, which is located behind the image panel and located in a fairly standard area, right in the center and very close to the bottom area. Best of all is the incredible speed it has, possibly the fastest on the market right now ahead of the Huawei and of course the Xiaomi. It is practically at the level of the rear readers and fails very few times even placing the finger not exactly centered on the sensor.
And facial recognition is not far behind either. The fact of having the camera located in the front and without retractable technology, makes the process take tenths of a second to complete. Just by pressing the unlock button we will have an almost instantaneous process and created by the manufacturer itself. The good thing about this is that it offers better recognition than the one integrated in Google, with much more precision, and almost recognizing us with any look and even very little light. It just fails with big sunglasses, otherwise, a standout in everything. Of the best that we have in the market without a doubt.
Hardware and performance TOP
Another place where this OnePlus 7 has not suffered cuts compared to its older brother is in its hardware and benefits section. This is perhaps its best asset for users who want a smaller terminal with top performance on the market.
And it is that we have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 process along with its more powerful Adreno 640 GPU. This SoC has a count of 8 64-bit cores, where 1 Kryo 485 works at 2.84 GHz 3 of them work at 2.4 GHz and the remaining 4 at 1.8 GHz. To this we add a RAM of 6 or 8 GB LPDD4X working at 2133 MHz, both versions available in Europe. Only a 12 GB version has been left behind, although this has been destined for the Pro version as normal.
In storage we also have differential hardware, with versions of 128 and 256 GB of space. But this time I used the latest generation of UFS 3.0 flash memory , which is twice as fast as the previous UFS 2.1. In fact, these speeds are in transfers of up to 2, 666 MB / s with a power consumption equal to that of the previous generation. Of course, these new OnePlus have no possibility of storage expansion, for the simple fact that it would be a bottleneck in the performance of the terminal.
This time we have carried out several performance tests with the AnTuTu Benchmark, 3DMark and GeekBench programs, since we are facing a very high performance terminal comparable to the best on the market.
Of course we have tested it in PUB Mobile or Asphalt 9 games to verify that everything works perfectly. Obviously, the 90 Hz of the Pro version makes quite the difference in terms of gaming experience, but this terminal has behaved impeccably. With the maximum graphics of the games it will redound without any problem, and the warm-up is not too pronounced after several hours of vice. Of course, we will recommend the pro version for gaming for the simple fact of being larger and having a better screen, we believe that for a few euros more it will be very worthwhile.
But if what we are looking for is a mobile that performs well for day-to-day tasks, with this OnePlus 7 we will be more than enough. The hardware in this case will not be so important, since even with less powerful processors such as the 845 or even the 730 the experience will be quite similar, but the section that follows will make a difference.
Android 9.0 + OxygenOS operating system
And we do not fail to appreciate the most differential aspects of this terminal compared to the competition, and another one is the set of operating system + customization layer. In this case we have of course Android 9.0 Pie, and on it the OxygenOS layer in its version 9.5.8 and updating. And is that OnePlus is one of the manufacturers that offers more update support in the market and with greater longevity in them. An example is the fact that previous terminals are still being updated via FOTA or manual to the latest versions of Android, which practically no manufacturer offers.
What's more, we can even test the new Android Q in this one and the 9 Pro in its Beta 3 version. The manufacturer ensures at least two years of updates, although they always tend to be even more, and this will be very interesting as an option for smartphones that incorporate Android ONE. On top of the system we have what is perhaps the best GUI at present, OxygenOS, due to the simplicity of use, its appearance so similar to Android ONE and the large number of extra options it brings to the terminal.
In fact, it is one of the reasons why these terminals with the same hardware as other flagships give extra performance. We have exceptional system integration and stability in virtually any circumstance. The layer includes interesting options such as game mode to optimize hardware performance and suppress notifications when opening a game. Among others, the quick start and the ability to record the screen with a simple option located in the main panel, ideal for content creators, also stand out.
The cameras of the OnePlus 7: it is its weakest section
One of the always important sections in a smartphone is that of capturing photos, and much more in a high-end terminal such as this OnePlus 7. And you should know that the manufacturer has inserted the scissors here with respect to the 7 Pro, and for the most demanding we do recommend the Pro version for having more versatility.
Its rear camera competes
Starting at the back, we have a dual sensor, yes, no triple camera. The main sensor is a Sony IMX586 Exmor RS with 48 Mpx with a focal aperture of 1.7 and of the CMOS BSI type. We go down to the second sensor, which is not a wide angle and is not a telephoto lens, only a 5 Mpx with 2.4 focal length that functions to capture extra information for the main sensor. All this is accompanied by a standard Dual LED flash. At least the main sensor itself is the same as that of the Pro version, but we lose the versatility provided by elements such as optical zoom or wide angle.
As for typical functionalities, we have a good level autofocus, support for automatic HDR, image stabilization or a fairly fast burst mode. Thanks to the strong hardware we have, this sensor is capable of recording in 4K at 60 FPS, and yes, with excellent optical and software stabilization. In the same way we can record in slow motion at 480 FPS instead of 960 as in other terminals.
These sensors are accompanied by OnePlus's own application, which has an extremely simple interface and without the use of AI such as Xiaomi. It has different options such as portrait mode, night mode, or a digital x2 zoom that obviously does not offer the quality of an optical zoom in use, but has very good results. Perhaps we miss some more detailed options offered by other manufacturers although it is true that in point and shoot this is a very good option.

Night mode
Well, being the same main sensor as the Pro model, the sensations it gives us are quite similar. It should be said that we will not have benefits that equal the best high-end terminals, and here OnePlus should refine the aim a little more.
Undoubtedly, the main sensor demonstrates its power and provides us with photos of brutal detail (keep in mind that the photos presented here are very low in resolution and quality). In good light conditions the dynamic range and HDR work very well and give us an image with colors very similar to reality. But it is also true that sometimes the image sins of overexposing itself more than it should, as AI does in the Xiaomi losing naturalness.
In low light night scenes, it has performed well, but far from other terminals where the image quality is much higher. Perhaps it is that we have made it too difficult in the capture made, but the rest of the list we had were not better. There is a big difference between using night mode and doing without it, greatly improving exposure and eliminating glare from streetlights. However, the result for me is very improvable.
Finally, we did like the portrait mode due to the fact that we defined the limits of the central image well, although the background processing is quite high as can be seen in the capture. The use of the x2 digital zoom has worked surprisingly well on almost all occasions, and here the secondary sensor does seem to make a difference and get closer to what an optical zoom is. The detail of the entire image is very good and there is no watercolor effect or image washing in any region unless we zoom in on the image.
High level front camera, but it lacks “chicha”
And then we will see in more detail the front camera, which is also the same as the OnePlus 7 Pro. It is a Sony IMX471 Exmor RS sensor of 16 Mpx with 2.0 focal aperture, which in this case gives us a fairly good image quality. Additionally, it is capable of recording 4K content at 30 FPS with software stabilization.

Portrait mode (moving)
Portrait mode
Regarding the quality of the selfie, I found it very good, both in portrait and normal mode. The 16 Mpx sensor does an excellent job and displays the image in great detail and with natural colors and no overexposure. Even in shaky portrait mode photos, such as the dog and accidental "kiss, " the quality is good enough and the processor has been able to capture the edges of the main shot even while moving, demonstrating the solvency of the set.
Taking stock of the situation, it may be advisable to use GCam on this device as the front and rear sensor are compatible.
OnePlus 7 battery and connectivity
The last section corresponds to the autonomy of the OnePlus 7, in which we undoubtedly have improvements over the 7 Pro mainly due to the use of a smaller AMOLED panel. However, the battery has also dropped in capacity, being 3700 mAh and with a fast charge of 20W with Fast Charge technology. The charger that it brings us, at least the test version is the 20W (5V at 4A), which allows us to perform a full charge in approximately 1 hour. Of course, without using it and with a certain warm-up.
In a terminal like this high-end and for its price, we really miss a wireless charge. We do not say that it is essential, but at least the user needs that versatility for the cost of the terminal.
During the time we have used it, the autonomy has been quite high despite the powerful hardware, its 6.41-inch screen and having a relatively small capacity. We are talking about almost two days with relatively demanding use on certain occasions and about 8 hours of screen at low brightness. They are very good figures, since for example the Xiaomi mi 6T has a smaller screen and it barely reached 7 hours of screen with its 4000 mAh. This demonstrates the excellent optimization of the set that OnePlus has done.
If this phone had been fitted with a larger battery, we would be talking about almost unbeatable figures, considering that we have even performed benchmarks during the process, and seen enough multimedia content. Of course if we play enough, this autonomy is going to be reduced to one day with approximately 10-15% of battery left, which is not bad either. In any case, the figures will change depending on how each one uses it.
We still have to give a review of the connectivity of the OnePlus 7, which is quite extensive and with notable improvements in the location section. We have Bluetooth 5.0 LE with support for A2DP and APT-x, and Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g / n / ac in 2.4 and 5 GHz with Wi-Fi MIMO, support for Wi-Fi access point and Wi-Fi. Fi Direct . As for geolocation we have A-GPS, Beidou, Galileo, Galileo E1 + E5a, GLONASS, GPS, GPS L1 + L5, S-GPS, which are practically all the technologies available today.
The terminal also includes NFC for mobile payment, something that is mandatory in a high-end range like this one. We only lose the 3.5 mm Jack connector and the FM radio, two quite important losses for many, although we are already quite used to this fact.
Final words and conclusion about OnePlus 7
We begin this final balance of the OnePlus 7 by talking about the photographic section, which we could say is one of its least strong points. The cut compared to the 7 Pro is noticeable, since we have lost the telephoto and wide angle, although the main sensor remains, as well as the front. The general quality is very good since the Sony sensor that equipment is one of the best, but we are still one step below the main flagship on the market. With a GCam installed we would have very notable improvements, so try it.
In contrast, we have a simply spectacular hardware section, with the best in processor with the 855 and 6/8 GB of RAM, and UFS 3.0 storage that make this terminal, along with the Pro, as the fastest on the market. Absolute fluidity and gaming performance, so with no objection except that we don't have expandable storage.
Coupled with this, there is the software section, with Android 9.0 and OxygenOS, the best layer on the market for its extraordinary integration, its speed, ease of use and an update police of at least two years. We have functions such as game mode, possibility to record the screen or a quick start system. Regarding security systems, there have been no cuts, and both the fingerprint sensor and facial recognition are the fastest on the market.
We recommend reading our guide to the best mid-range smartphones.
The autonomy we liked much more than the 7 Pro, and despite having "only" 3700 mAh we have endured perfectly both days and about 8 hours of screen, yes, with the low brightness. This again demonstrates great hardware-software optimization. We have a good 20W fast charge but no wireless charging.
The aesthetic section is quite continuous, being a terminal very similar to the OnePlus 6T, with a drop-type notch and an Optic AMOLED screen with very good image quality. Too bad it does not have those 90 Hz of the Pro version, but it would be something extra. We also have a great improvement in the GPS positioning system and in the sound section with the double stereo speaker.
To finish, we can find the OnePlus 7 with 8/256 GB for a price of 609 euros, while the 6/128 GB version will be available for 559 euros in the manufacturer's official store. They are about 150 euros less than the OnePlus 7 Pro, so it will be a good option for those who want a somewhat smaller terminal with greater autonomy. But if we want an extra in photography and gaming, better make the effort and go for the flagship.
