OnePlus puts all the meat on the grill with the new OnePlus 7T, a smartphone with a Fluid 90Hz screen, 128GB of storage and fast charging Warp Charge. Do you want to know more? Keep reading.

OnePlus is a Chinese company founded in 2013 with a very specific mission: to succeed in the world of mobile telephony.

OnePlus 7T Unboxing

In OnePlus 7T it arrives in a cardboard box packaging with a corporate matt red finish of the brand. In all its external cover we only have three elements: brand logo, model name and creative team appointment:

The finish of all these details is in black with resinous coverage, achieving a reflective effect.

On the back of the box we only have a label indicating the color model purchased, some quality certificates and its serial number.

The contents of the box are summarized in:

  • OnePlus 7T Power Adapter for Warp Charge 30 Warp Charge Type-C Cable (USB 2.0 Compatible) Quick Start Guide Welcome Letter Safety and Warranty Card Information Promotional Logo Stickers Clear Case Screen Protector (pre- attached) the SIM card tray

OnePlus 7T design

For this review the model we have received is Glacier Blue , although we can also find it in Frosted Silver . In both cases, the difference is found in the back cover, whose metallic effect finish can vary between blue and silver.

Something that may surprise some regarding the OnePlus 7T's design is its size. With dimensions of 160.94 × 74.44 × 8.13 mm it is not a model of an immeasurable format in the hand, presenting a moderate width that gives it a very stylized presence.

Finishes

Regardless of its color variations, the OnePlus 7T has curved shapes in which the back cover is slightly oval in its forward edges. This generates an effect in which the silhouette of the chassis seems to open to receive the screen glass on it.

The exterior finishes are made from a frosted matte glass overlay with a color overlay overlay. In its upper margin we see an access point for technical repairs while in the lower we have a slot for dual Nano SIM, USB Type-C port and microphones.

The glass has been treated with Gorilla Glass 3D technology, a screen model prepared to withstand scratches and breaks. This same material on the back is used on the screen, whose range of activity is framed by a thin black bezel just two millimeters thick.

This curved glass bezel extends slightly to the sides, where it is joined to a silver structure that surrounds all the edges of the phone and houses all ports and buttons. In this case we see on the left the button for volume adjustment and on the right an Alert Slider and on / off button.

screen

Without a doubt, the aspect that most attracts the attention of a mobile phone today. The OnePlus 7T's display is an AMOLED model that boasts 6.55 inches, 90Hz refresh rate, 1, 000 nits of brightness, and an aspect ratio of 20: 9. It has a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels with a ratio of 402 PPP (pixel per inch).

The design of the same presents rounded edges and the integration of the camera (the famous drop notch) within the dynamic space, something that we already found in other models of both OnePlus and the competition, although in this case it is very small.

As outstanding qualities we have HDR10 + technology with dynamic brightness. This generates a high contrast of deep blacks and very bright whites, obtaining a very significant chromatic dynamism.

Front and rear camera

A smartphone without a camera is like a pie without filling. Those of OnePlus know it well and for the 7T they have brought us a good shipment of them.

To start, it is interesting to comment on the rear cameras since they are always the most powerful model of the two views. It is a set of three lenses accompanied by an LED for flash or flashlight. All this is within the circumference of a single piece of glass that protrudes from the rest of the cover.

These lenses consist of a joint capacity that allows a 17, 26 and 51 mm trifocal system. Looking at them separately, we have:

  • Main camera with 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 sensor and f / 1.6 ultra-wide 16-megapixel aperture with 117º maximum field of view and f / 2.2 aperture. 12 megapixel telephoto lens and f / 2.2 aperture.

For its part, the front camera has a Sony IMX471 sensor, 16 megapixels, autofocus and f / 2.0 aperture.

As a whole with both cameras we can perform a large number of functions that we can see in depth in the commissioning section for both photography and video.

Ports and connections

As has been the trend in the highest-end mobile models, the 3.5-millimeter jack disappears in the OnePlus 7T, giving way to wireless connectivity:

  • Wi-Fi 802.11 2.4G to 5G Bluetooth 5.0 NFC

Apart from the above, the Type C 3.1 port, the only analog connection, is not only for the charger, but also supports headphone input.

Operating system, sensors and security

OnePlus has opted for its own customization of the Android 10 system resulting in a branded version of the house, the OxygenOS. The peculiarities of this operating system are a performance improvement, faster management speed and expanded optimization. All this results in a 15% higher speed of graphic processing compared to the original Android 10.

Accompanying the new operating system we have a large number of sensors that ensure that you get the smoothest driving experience possible:

  • On-screen fingerprint sensor - Fingerprint unlock enhanced with customizable backgrounds and animations. Accelerometer - shuts down the phone and protects OS and data. Ambient light sensor: designed for automatic adaptation of screen brightness and shutter for photography and video. Electronic compass: GPS geolocation positioning. Proximity sensor: proximity to the screen as we speak. Gyroscope: more precise automatic rotation of the smartphone. Sensor Core: for the measurement of steps and distance traveled.

Finally in security systems we have the aforementioned fingerprint on the screen for unlocking or facial unlocking if we prefer. Both options are an alternative to the traditional lock by pattern, PIN or password. We also have the possibility of saving documents and images in hidden folders and backup in the cloud with Google Drive.

Also in case of loss, theft of the phone or accident we have some options that we can have activated as a prevention system:

  • Find my device: remotely in case of loss through Google Play application or web service. Emergency rescue: send an automatic SMS to the last numbers contacted after a call to the emergency services with our current location.

OnePlus 7T internal hardware

We turn here to more technical questions in which we will review the components included within the OnePlus 7T

Processor

For starters, the processor is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus. This is a model released on July 15, 2019, and features eight cores, seven-nanometer transistors, and up to 2.96 GHz of processing. The artificial intelligence (AI) engine that runs this whole shed is a Qualcomm AI, specifically the Adreno 640 present in the GPU.

GPU

The GPU integrated in the OnePlus 7T is an Adreno 640, a model that reaches 672 MHz speed and allows an excellent response to the maximum screen resolution of 3840 x 2160 px.

Storage and RAM

The OnePlus 7T comes into our hands with a tremendous 128 GB storage. This model of memory type UFS 3.0 constitutes a step forward when it comes to energy optimization and performance. On the OnePlus 7T , its read and write speed with a two-channel configuration reaches an impressive 2.9 GB / s.

The RAM memory for its part is an 8 GB LPDDR4X unit that reaches speeds of up to 34.1 GB / s. Its structure is subdivided into four chip channels of 2GB of memory each, transmitting at a rate of 4266 megabits per second.

Additionally, and in case it does not seem fast enough, in the operating system we have the RAM Boost function, which intelligently optimizes the use of memory over time to improve performance.

Putting OnePlus 7T into use

When we tell you that the OnePlus 7 is a bad beast, let's be serious. With hardware that includes some of the best components on the market, there is practically nothing we cannot do with this smartphone. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus is a processor prepared to perform perfectly with the most demanding mobile games with 3D graphics and refresh rate that we can set to either 60Hz or 90Hz for a smoother experience.

Screen qualities

The distortion index of the screen at very forced angles is extremely low and the color perception remains quite homogeneous. Using the OnePlus 7T outdoors is not a problem since the screen reaches 1000 nits of brightness. This is undoubtedly an excellent quantity, although we must remember that with it we will also notice greater energy consumption and less autonomy.

OnePlus 7T offers us options for energy saving, reading mode or night mode that contribute significantly to reducing the impact that a high brightness generates on the battery. From our personal experience, the automatic sensor works very correctly, although we are more in favor of manual regulation.

Something that also affects our energy consumption is the refresh rate that we have established on the screen. Undoubtedly, 90Hz offer a much smoother and lag-free Instagram cloud tag browsing experience, the same happening in online games of the Fortnite cut.

The negative side is that the autonomy decreases if we choose to maintain these 90Hz permanently, so this is where it is time to decide between a better autonomy with 60Hz or more refresh rate. To be honest, it is not that the difference between 60Hz or 90Hz is extremely noticeable in activities such as browsing or viewing videos on YouTube, but you can notice it more when recording or playing games.

Regarding the screen itself, the 20: 9 aspect ratio achieves a panoramic format that greatly stylizes the silhouette of the OnePlus 7T. Holding it with a medium size hand (17 cm long) our thumb sweeps from the opposite corner to approximately the middle of the phone. The handling of controls or applications that are in the upper vertical half will normally require the use of our free hand if we do not want to sacrifice a secure grip on it.

Cameras

A commissioning of the OnePlus 7T is nothing without testing the cameras, especially taking into account its technical specifications seen above. Mainly we find in the software a gallery of default usage options that cover our most basic uses:

  • Photo: the default mode, allows you to zoom and use the wide angle and activate the super macro for detail photos at a distance of 2.5cm. Portrait: a specific alternative that includes depth effect to blur the background, also supports wide angle and has a beauty filter. Night Landscape: Optimizes lighting levels and contrast in low light environments, especially outdoors. It also has wide angle.
All these options allow a manual adjustment of brightness and contrast that appears when tapping the screen. We can also focus on specific areas in this way.

We can also find advanced alternatives for those who are not satisfied with taking photos and already want to embark on more creative alternatives:

  • Pro: Allows manual control of focus, color temperature, regulate ISO from 100 to 3200 dots and shutter level. Time Lapse: We record during a cycle in which we can choose between a resolution of 720 or 1080p. Panorama: it allows to record a 180º panoramic thanks to superimposition of images in sequence. Slow motion: we have the option to record at 1080p with 240fps or 720p at 480fps, although it does not support wide angle.

Landscape and panoramic

Night mode

The use of night mode in open environments significantly improves the quality of lighting, contrast and saturation. This is true whether or not we use the wide angle and is a significantly better result compared to conventional photography.

The two images above are a comparison between the default photo mode and the night landscape mode so that you have a more specific visual perception of the factors that we discussed. Basically, the intensity and depth of blacks are reduced and other colors as well as light sources are enhanced.

Default photo mode focusing the Cube

The effect becomes even more noticeable when we take a conventional photograph in a low-light environment, we focus on a lens that generates its own light source. Especially if we are at a certain distance the lighting is somewhat diffuse and is not very specific.

Active night landscape mode

By using the night landscape mode in this environment, we can see that because we are directly on an avenue lit by lampposts, the immediate environment becomes brighter and our objective in the background (the cube) loses a little intensity of brightness since all the image itself becomes sharper and contrast levels are regulated.

Portrait and beauty filters

In this case we approve the front camera to compare the results of various selfies .

Photography in portrait mode without filter

Going to observe the results obtained with the portrait mode, the camera has a face detector that generates an automatic focus and slightly blurs our back environment. The default portrait offers remarkably good results that can be complemented by the beauty filter.

This filter can be applied in a total of three levels. The observable differences are a matification of the skin tone that eliminates blemishes. This is especially observable (in my case) in the crust that I have near the chin. Notable changes are noticeable at the x3 level, which slightly enlarges the size of the eyes, mattifies until the pores are removed and adds a slight warm filter to the skin.

Detail plans

The quality and precision of the three rear cameras is really remarkable if we put on the table components of different textures and colors that are at the same distance. Food is an excellent resource for this and also a gift for the eyes.

Photograph taken with flash

The supported image formats are as follows:

  • Playback: JPEG, PNG, BMP, GIF Output: JPEG, PNG

Video

Without a doubt the photography is magnificent, so as you can imagine the video recording was not going to be less. The OnePlus 7T's AMOLED screen can achieve a maximum screen resolution of 3840 x 2160 px, allowing you to record at resolutions up to 4K at 30 or 60 frames per second. Its compatible formats are:

  • Playback: MKV, MOV, MP4, H.265 (HEVC), AVI, WMV, TS, 3GP, FLV, WEBM Recording: MP4

Microphones and speakers

You cannot talk about video without commenting on the sound recording. The OnePlus 7T features dual stereo speakers and is compatible with noise cancellation systems. Especially interesting is the incorporation of Dolby Atmos technology, the first hybrid surround sound system that mixes the classic channels of sound (5.1, 7.1 or 9.1). The supported sound formats are:

  • Playback: MP3, AAC, AAC +, WMA, AMR-NB, AMR-WB, WAV, FLAC, APE, OGG, MID, M4A, IMY, AC3, EAC3, EAC3-JOC, AC4 Recording: WAV, AAC, AMR

Test of performance

It is time to stop recreating ourselves in the most superficial aspects and go to work with the stress tests for the CPU and GPU and check their performance response comparing the results with competing smartphones. For this we have used the following programs and tests:

  • AnTuTu BenchMark GeekBench 5 (multi core) GeekBench 5 (single core) 3DMark SlingShot Extreme (Open GL ES)

With Antutu we have fully tested the CPU and GPU with rendering, RAM read speed and UX. The results speak for themselves and the score is the second best on the graph, making the OnePlus 7T compete closely with the Nubia Red Magic 3S.

Going on to comment on the CPU results in Geekbench we find again that both the performance of the eight cores and single core is in the top 3 competing with both the results of Huawei Mate 30 Pro and Nubia Red Magic 3S.

Finally looking at a global rating with 3DMark Sling Shot Extreme the thing is clear: the closest equivalent in performance and benefits with the OnePlus 7T is the Nubia Red Magic 3S. The competition between both smartphones is tight and after all the analyzes it is clear that this mobile phone is currently the most cutting edge.

Battery and autonomy

Battery is that key factor that is often overshadowed by much more eye-catching factors on a smartphone such as its screen or camera. However, if you think that the OnePlus team has forgotten to take care of this section, you are very wrong. The OnePlus 7T comes into our hands with a 3800 mAh non-removable battery. Its autonomy as always is subject to factors such as the brightness level, screen refresh rate and amount or type of use that we give to our smartphone.

Warp Charge 30T fast charge (5 V / 6 A) allows you to go from 0% to 65 0 70% in approximately half an hour. Another of its tricks and the justification that the charger plug has that peculiar size is that power management and heat dissipation during charging is done on the adapter itself, not on the phone. This decision prevents the OnePlus 7T from overheating in the process and favors the longevity of the components.

Final words and conclusions about OnePlus 7T

The OnePlus 7T is a smartphone model that has left us more than satisfied with both its performance and the results on the test bench compared to the competition. Clearly this is the way for a high-end mobile phone and is an ideal candidate for the most demanding users. Be it photography, video, navigation and even office or editing activities.

We recommend reading: Best high-end smartphone on the market.

With a 6.55 ”AMOLED screen and cameras capable of recording at 4K with 60fps, we already have an idea of what kind of beast we have before us. The performance of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus processor is excellent for a fairly low consumption. We should always keep an eye on the brightness of the screen and the amount of hertz of its polling rate. Undoubtedly 90Hz are noticeable, but if what we are concerned with is having more autonomy and we do not make a very demanding use of the phone we can always reduce them to 60Hz. The image and sound quality are worth seeing, as well as the overall finishes of the OnePlus 7T in Gorilla Glass 3D frosted glass .

The OnePlus 7T is available from € 599.00 on its Official Website. Personally we consider it a very competitive price within the range to which it belongs, especially considering the benefits it offers. It is certainly aimed at a specific audience looking for a high processing speed that is accompanied by the best resolutions for photography and video. All this of course without forgetting the autonomy of the battery and its fast charging system Warp Charge 30T.
