Sharkoon is a brand mainly known for the production of peripherals at a favorable price. The Sharkoon Skiller SGK4 is one of the latest additions to its keyboard line. Unlike previous SGK series keyboards, it is not a mechanical keyboard but a membrane model.

First of all, we thank Sharkoon for the trust placed in us when transferring the product to us for analysis.

Sharkoon Skiller SGK4 technical features

Unboxing and design

The packaging corresponds in design to other Sharkoon products. The keyboard is neatly packaged seamlessly in a cardboard box with a very colorful and eye-catching design. This box displays various high-resolution images as well as the most outstanding keyboard features. In the box we find the keyboard along with a brief manual.

Looking at the keyboard, it is immediately obvious that we are dealing with a gaming keyboard. Although the Sharkoon SGK4 is a budget model, it is made of fairly hard plastic, it feels solid. The different pleats and notches on the edge fit well with the overall aggressive keyboard layout.

The Sharkoon SGK4 is equipped with a 180 cm long fixed USB cable. The manufacturer went to the trouble of providing the SGK4 with a braided cable with a gold-plated connector, despite a relatively cheap keyboard. It is not necessary, but it is nice to see.

The Sharkoon SGK4 is a fairly complete membrane keyboard, it has rubber dome switches, which must last at least 10 million keystrokes. On-board memory is also available to store game profiles. As a good gaming keyboard, the SGK4 has a maximum polling rate of 1000 Hz. Additionally, there is an RGB LED lighting system and a built-in wrist rest.

The design is similar to that of other keyboards. At the top we see eight additional keys: four for the game profiles and four for the light effects. Sharkoon has chosen not to add additional macro keys this time. Additional functionalities such as media keys have been added to other keys. A second Windows button is missing and has been replaced by a Skiller key, which actually serves as a separate Fn button.

The keyboard contains membrane switches as mentioned. This means that there is a mat under the keys that ensures electrical contact when pressed, and that a signal is sent to the PC. This implementation is cheaper for the manufacturer, which is why we often see this technology in cheaper models.

These rubber dome or membrane switches are relatively hard with a relatively short travel. The Sharkoon SGK4 is no exception here, as the performance is exactly what is expected of a membrane keyboard. Sharkoon provides the keyboard with an anti-ghosting implementation and a 2ms response time, which can be kept up to date with the quickest finger movements. The polling rate is also adjustable through software supplied by Sharkoon, 125/250/500 / 1000Hz.

At the bottom we see two plastic legs that we can use to slightly vary the height and inclination of the keyboard, something usual.

Sharkoon SGK4 software

As for the software of this Sharkoon SGK4, the keyboard can be used perfectly without installing the application, although it is recommended to do so in order to take advantage of all its features.

We see that there are sufficient settings for basic functions. Macro setup is easy and can be linked to one of the four game profiles that are stored on the keyboard. It is also possible to link specific programs or games to a specific profile. When a linked program starts, the keyboard will automatically load the corresponding profile, which is very convenient. Of course, it is also possible to manually select these profiles using the keys provided for this purpose at the top of the keyboard. There is no lack of the option to adjust the response time from 8 ms to 2 ms, the polling rate and the possibility of activating the gaming mode, which disables the windows key.

The software also offers us the control of the lighting, being an RGB system we can choose between 16.8 million colors and several different lighting effects. We can also customize the speed of the effects, as well as the intensity of the LEDs.

Final words and conclusion about Sharkoon SGK4

Sharkoon SGK4 is a membrane keyboard that is a very good option if you are looking for this type of product. Its design is quite robust, something common in all keyboards of the brand, so that in this sense we can have no complaints. Perhaps we can say that the inclusion of an integrated palm rest is something that not all users will like, and it makes the keyboard bigger.

As for the experience of use, its membrane push buttons are quite nice, the manufacturer has made a good implementation of this design. Logically it does not reach the level of mechanical switches or remotely, but we think it is good enough to be a membrane keyboard. Finally, the software improves its possibilities of use, since it allows us to create macros and configure various parameters. The lighting management is quite complete and will allow us to give our desk a quite differentiating touch of light. The keys are quite marked and besides let the light pass very well, with this we will not have problems using it either during the day or at night.

Sharkoon SGK4 is for sale for approximately € 30.
